After years ofDogmabeing held under lock and key by Harvey Weinstein,Kevin Smithrecently reacquired the distribution rights to the film, and a worldwide re-release is currently in the works. Released in 1999,Dogmawas one of the most controversial films of the ’90s, due to its depictions of various Christian figures, like the twelve (thirteen including Rufus) disciples, the angels Bartleby and Loki, and God himself/herself. Despite that, and the film being withheld from streaming services for years,Dogmahas become a cult classic, and it’s almost time for fans around the world to enjoy it again on the big screen.
Per Deadline, the French distribution company Goodfellas is backing the upcoming re-release of Kevin Smith’sDogma. The 4K remaster of the film is set to screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as part of the festival’s Cannes Classics sidebar. Kevin Smith acquired the rights to his film in October last year through his View Askew Productions company, in partnership with Triple Media Film. The latter company is responsible for the long-awaited 4K remaster ofDogma, which has been supervised by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robert Yeoman. Yeoman worked as the Director of Photography onDogma, before going on to work on major movies likeThe Grand Budapest Hotel.

Following the acquisition, Yeoman shared his excitement for the upcoming re-release and promised that fans will be pleased with the new remaster. “I am so pleased about the re-release ofDogma,” Yeoman said. “I recently re-watched the film, and it definitely holds up! The remaster looks great. Congratulations to Kevin and our cast and crew for making such a hilarious film.” Following the ongoing Cannes Film Festival,Dogmawill release in 1,500 theaters across the US and Canada from June 5.
Kevin Smith Shares His Disbelief at ‘Dogma’s Cannes Status
While the most exciting part of the Cannes Film Festival is the various new releases that will hold their world premieres at the event, the Cannes Classics title is a major milestone in a director’s career. Created 20 years ago, the sidebar celebrates remasters of major cinematic classics, as well as vastly underappreciated gems. Past Classics include2001: A Space Odyssey,Easy Rider,The Shining,A Fistful of Dollars, andParis, Texas.
In the press release, Kevin Smith revealed how honored and excited he felt aboutDogmabeing honored as part of this year’s lineup. “Sold-out screenings, standing ovations, and now Cannes?” Smith began. “This is beyond divine. To seeDogmahonored as a Cannes Classic is a true blessing. Thanks to everyone who believed in this resurrection, and thank you to the fans who showed up, in pews full.”

Dogmahas already had a limited re-release. When Smith regained the rights to the film last year, he took the movie on tour across the US as part of the “DOGMA: The Resurrection Tour, A 25th Anniversary Celebration, with Kevin Smith.” Tickets were completely sold out within 24 hours.
