As we all know by this point in timeThe ConjuringandThe Conjuring 2director James Wan is currently developing anAquamanhorror movie spin-off based onThe Trench. A species of horrific sea monsters, The Trench seem like the perfect characters to base a DC horror movie on, if you ask me. And today we have an update on the spin-off via Wan himself who lets us know that the powers that be behind the scenes are still crafting the story and screenplay and that the final product will be more of a monster movie than a superhero movie.
Specifically producerJames Wansays ofThe Trench.
“We, you know, we’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much, but definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it’s still definitely part of theAquamanworld.”
I don’t know about you, but this news excites me to no end. I mean we all already know that Wan can craft one hell of a horror movie, and to add that into his work as a director behind some of thebiggest blockbusters of all timewithFurious 7and, of course,Aquamanshould be a delight to see up on the big screen. That said, there isn’t currently a plan for Wan to take on directing duties for this monster movie spin-off - but one can dream, am I right? Hopefully, we’ll find out soon as producer Peter Safran has said that we can plan on seeing this monster movie beforeAquaman 2. Specifically, Wan’s producing partner has said in the past.
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] followingArthur and Meradown into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
If this project ever comes to fruition, again, it is set to be a spin-off based on the killer characters from Wan’s recent mega-blockbusterAquaman. Wan directed that film from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, James Wan, and Will Beall based on the character created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger. Peter Safran and Rob Cowan producedAquamanwhich featured music by Rupert Gregson-Williams, cinematography by Don Burgess, and editing by Kirk Morri. Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, The Safran Company, Cruel and Unusual Films, and Mad Ghost Productions were the production companies behind the film which was distributed into a theater near you by Warner Bros. Pictures back on June 09, 2025. This update comes to usvia comicbook.com.
