We know that we are getting not one, not two but four (yes, four) sequels toAvatarstarting in 2018, but up until now we have heard very little about what the movies will be about. While it may not be much, directorJames Cameronhas finally spilled some details aboutAvatar 2and beyond. From the sound of things, it looks like we are in for the most expensive family drama of all-time.

Currently, anAvatarprequel Cirque du Soleil show calledToruk - The First Nighthas been touring the United States and just started a run in New York.Cameronspoke withVarietyabout the show, which he served as a consultant on, and in the process, revealed a bit about the upcoming sequels. Here is what he had to say.

“The storyline in the sequels really followsJake and Neytiriand their children. It’s more of afamily sagaabout the struggle with the humans. But thematically, ‘Toruk’ manages to land very very closely to the feeling of where the sequel stories are going.”

Cameronmentioned specifically thatToruk(which is named for the dragon-creature from the movie) won’t actually connect to the new movies. That is good for avidAvatarfans who won’t have to feel compelled to shell out a bunch of money and possibly have to travel to see the show. More importantly, it seems like the sequels will heavily focus on the family aspect of things, which is a thread that can definitely be pulled, given whereAvatarleft off. It wasn’t clear ifCameronwas talking specifically aboutAvatar 2, or if he was talking more generally about the story arc of the next four movies.

While it may not sound like much, it is pretty much the most information we have received story-wise about theAvatar sequels, beyond the fact that they are happening. The only other truly solid detail we reported on since the sequels were announced came recently when actorStephen Langrevealed that his character Colonel Quaritch will play a big role in all four sequels, despite the fact that it seemed like he died at the end of the first movie. Here is what he had to say in a recent interview with Mashable.

“Well, I can say because it’s a matter of public record, that the character of Col. Quaritch is important in each of the films - Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5.”

It should come as no surprise that a sequel toAvataris happening. Even after a newStar Warsmovie, a very successful fourth entry in theJurassic Parkfranchise and a couple ofAvengersmovies,Avatarstill remains far and away the highest grossing movie of all-time, having grossed $2.7 billion worldwide. What is surprising is just how long it has taken to get the movie going, but sinceJames Cameronwas writing four movies and will shoot the movies all simultaneously, it makes sense there would be quite a bit of prep time involved. As of right now,Avatar 2is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2018, and the three sequels will follow in December of 2020, 2022 and 2023. We will be sure to keep you posted as more information becomes available.
