The Mandaloriancreator Jon Favreau shared some concept art of the show’s beloved “Baby Yoda” character, and the illustration is just as incredibly adorable. Just two episodes into the newStar Warsseries on Disney+, an infant of Yoda’s species has stolen the show by becoming its most talked about character. With fans on social media making it clear they can’t get enough of the most precious little creature fromStar Warscanon, Favreau took to Twitter to reveal some early concept art of the character. Despite the “Baby Yoda” nickname, the infant is not actually a younger version of the same Yoda we know and love from theStar Warsmovies. We know this becauseThe Mandaloriantakes place afterReturn of the Jedi, which killed off the beloved character. For now, those on the show simply refer to the character as “the Child,” but star Carl Weathers recently confirmed that the infant does have a name, but it just hasn’t been revealed yet. “You have to see the shows to figure out who this baby Yoda really is, and what he is all about, or even if he is really a baby Yoda,” Weathers states. The actor adds: “He has his own name, and he is very interesting and very knowledgeable and very cute.”
“The Child,” or Baby Yoda if you will, was introduced at the conclusion ofThe Mandalorian premiere. The titular bounty hunter wound up saving the 50-year-old infant when he discovered him to be the newest bounty he had been hired to procure.The Mandalorian Episode 2then spent the entire runtime keeping the Child protected from other bounty hunters looking to take the infant. This storyline has so far made for some very compelling television by featuring the popular Baby Yoda character at the very center of the plot.
The Mandalorianhas turned out to be a big hit withStar Warsfans and for the launch ofDIsney+, as the reception for the Disney+ series has been largely positive. For its first two episodes, the show has nearly-universal acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes with both critics and viewers. This could be a bit of a surprise for some, because even though the series shares a universe with theStar Warsmovies with many Easter eggs and references, it primarily follows an entirely original cast of characters with no major players from the films as of yet involved. With two episodes down, only six remain for the remainder of the show’s freshman season, but Disney has already ordered the production ofThe Mandalorianseason 2.
New episodes ofThe Mandalorianpremiere Fridays on the Disney+ streaming service. The franchise will also soon be returning to the big screen whenStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerpremieres in theaters on Dec. 20. The Skywalker Saga may be coming to an end, but the success ofThe Mandalorianshows there’s plenty of other wonderful characters to explore in theStar Warsuniverse.
