13 Assassins (Apr. 8)
This fantastic action movie has gotten very little attention since its initial release. It’sabout 13 samurainear the end of the Edo period in Japan who all have been searching for an opportunity to die in glory. Almost all of them have lived through a war and been left alive, so now they seek to find honor at the end of their life by going out fighting. What makes it cool is how committed the movie is to the Bushido code ethic, never straying from that morality for a Hollywood ending where our heroes get the upper hand through dishonest means or strive to make it out alive. They seek a fair fight and want to go out on a high note. Great action sequences, a simple plot, and an interesting villain who represents a larger turning of culture rather than just a generic evil all make this movie a great watch.
American Psycho (Apr. 1)
Most movies have lost their edge. Much has been smoothed out that it feels flat and unmemorable to the point of tedium. Movies are meant to shock and question the norm at times. Warnings of controversy can, in many cases, be the sign of a provocative film that sticks with you long after those credits do inevitably roll. Such is the case withMary Herron’smasterpiece of 2000,American Psycho.Upon release of both Brett Easton Ellis' novel and this movie, claims of sexism and gratuitous violence were all hurled at it with the narrative that it glorified these things and gave men a gateway to mistreat women. To glorify something is to show it as glamorous, attractive, or desirable even. Ask yourself, what part of Patrick Bateman’s life do you truly find desirable? He has no real friends or anything beyond the exterior view of his life, and he kills people (maybe) just to feel something—even the women he pays for laugh at his clearly fake facade. On the inside, he’s cold, miserable, and empty. This is a warning tale against many evils. Materialism, pride, and sexism are all presented in a package that serves to showcase the meaning of rich and empty, which is more relevant than ever.

Adam (Apr. 1)
Remember Will Graham fromHannibal? Here’s him playing a shy innocent man with Asperger’s with a pension for all things space related. It’s a sweet little film about falling in love that could very well be a weird prequel toHannibal.Rose Byrne stars opposite as the woman in question with the typical mean father who disapproves. While it’s true that movies need to challenge viewers from time to time, sometimes you need something more like comfort food with a happy-go-lucky rom-com like this. Variety is the spice of life.
Bridesmaids (Apr. 1)
Probably the quintessentialgirls' nightmovie. Filled with memorable scenes and a few thousand funny lines of mostly improv, Kristen Wiig stars as a maid of honor trying to corral some feisty bridesmaids through the usual assortment of going to Vegas, fitting dresses, getting food poisoning, and trying to outdo her co-star Rose Byrne at everything. Surprising for a comedy,Wiig’s character actually gets to growa little bit with her having to earn that leader title that she so wants. While many will remember the loud antics, the film is perhaps at its best in those clever passive-aggressive moments that go on forever.
Dredd (Apr. 1)
Karl Urban is a committed actor. He doesn’t get much credit for it but generally dives right into whatever the role requires. Heagreed to be in this movieeven though it would involve having his face completely obscured for the runtime. If you liked the gritty tone ofRobocop(1987) but hatedRoboCop(2014), this movie is your bag. It features an authentic costume, lots of violence, and a light sprinkling of 3D gimmicks.

Lincoln (Apr. 1)
This film saw Daniel-Day Lewis pick up his third and final Oscar with good reason. It’s a pretty fantastic portrayal of the 16th U.S. President, depicting his struggle during the Civil War to hold together a country that appeared to be forever broken. This Lincoln is calm, weathered, and even tells jokes. It’s in this portrayal you get a sense of how tough this man had to be to look beyond the violence of a nation and see a united future. What follows is a pretty entertainingstory based on the waroutside and the war inside the courtroom to emancipate the slaves with the 13th amendment in the final months of the Civil War. It’s a brilliant story filled with tension-filled moments that define the history of a nation and definitely worth a watch.
