Black Mirror

Beginning life in the United Kingdom and airing on Channel 4,Black Mirroris an anthology series that revolves around people’s personal lives and how technology manipulates their behavior. Often using grim sci-fi settings to comment and explore contemporary, dystopian themes, Black Mirror has been compared to such iconic shows asThe Twilight ZoneandThe Outer Limits.

The first season ofBlack Mirrorconsists of just three episodes, the first of which was entitledThe National Anthem, and begins when a member of the British royal family is kidnapped, with the kidnapper declaring that they will only be released if the British prime minister Michael Callow has sexual intercourse with a pig on live television. Since then, the show has dealt with memory implants, android versions of deceased boyfriends, simulated realities, online dating, and everything in between.

Black Mirrorhas been met with rave reviews since it began back in 2011 and has since been awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie three times. The last time audiences delved into the disturbing world ofBlack Mirrorwas back in 2019,with creator Charlie Brooker hesitant to bring the show back for another rounddue to the rather depressing state of the world lately.

“I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those,” he said back in 2020. “I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
