Universal Pictures has just unveiled the first look at the highly-awaited sequel, which will see Hawke reprising his role as The Grabber, alongside fellow returning cast members (and victims) Mason Thames as Finn and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen. You can checl out the newly released trailer below.
But how exactly will Hawke give life to The Grabber again, when the ruthless and violent killer was beaten in the first movie? Derrickson offered the perfect and most logical answer when talking to The Hollywood Reporter recently. Speaking after he showed the firstBlack Phone 2trailer at the pop culture convention CCXP Mexico, leaving attendees werescared out of their minds, the director said:

“The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story. But in this one, you’ve got a ghost that is a villain.”
Here Are Ethan Hawke’s Best Movies, Ranked
Known for his innate intelligence and magnetic boyish charm, Hawke has starred in amazing films, as well as writing and directing some as well.
Black Phone 2is set to be released justin time for the scary seasonon October 17. Derrickson’s usual collaborator, C. Robert Cargill, is co-writing the film with the director. Returning cast members include Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora, with new characters being played by Arianna Rivas and Demián Bichir.

‘Black Phone 2’ Is “More Violent, Scarier and More Graphic”
As the trailer shows, The Grabber now resides in another realm, making him an even more terrorizing figure than before. As you may have noticed after watching the trailer, Derrickson is likelyrevisiting his horror rootswithBlack Phone 2. There are shades of his 2008 filmSinister, considered one of the scariest movies of all time, and this time, he’s incorporating the snowy season as an eerie backdrop.Black Phone 2appears to be a radically different movie fromThe Black Phone. The sequel’s plot synopsis reads as follows:
Four years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of The Grabber. But true evil transcends death … and the phone is ringing again. Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).

As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, the headstrong 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.
Derrickson is pushing for an even more frightening experience this time around. For the sequel, Derrickson will clearly let loose a monster, showing The Grabber’s capacities as a violent ghost. When talking to The Hollywood Reporter, he explains whyBlack Phone 2feels like a completely different experience:

“A middle school coming-of-age horror movie is a different animal than a high school coming-of-age horror film. And there’s a ratcheting up of intensity because of that. I thought if I go make another movie first and don’t make a sequel now like you’re supposed to, then by the time I finish, these kids are all going to be in high school. And I can return to these characters in this different stage of their lives. It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic. And part of that is because of the age of the kids.”
