Brandon Routh is getting another shot at playing Superman in this year’sArrowVersecrossover,Crisis on Infinite Earths. Now, we have our first official look at Routh in the suit thanks to The CW and, safe to say, those who have been waiting for a little bit of Routh redemption in this department are likely going to be pleased. This is about as classic as it gets when it comes to the famed DC hero.
The network released the image, which seesBrandon Routhin a very faithful blue and red costume as a slightly older version of the superhero. This specific version comes from theKingdom Comestoryline, which was originally published as an Elseworlds tale by DC Comics in 1996. Illustrated by the great Alex Ross, the story sees Superman trying to convince a new generation of reckless heroes to adopt the ways and ideals of the past. Routh will also be playing his character Ray Palmer/The Atom fromLegends of Tomorrowin the crossover.
Brandon Routh originally had the chance to take up the mantle of theMan of Steelin 2006’sSuperman Returns. Directed byX-Menhelmer Bryan Singer, the movie ultimately ended up dividing audiences and critics and failing to deliver at the box office. So, unfortunately, Routh never got the chance to star in a sequel. Eventually, Henry Cavill took over the role for what would become Zack Snyder’sMan of Steel. Routh eventually made his way back to the DC fold inLegends of Tomorrow, but now things have truly come full circle for him, and for fans as well.
Crisis on Infinite Earthswas published by DC Comics in 1985. It remains one of the publisher’s most well-known and beloved crossover events of all time. Written by the legendary Marv Wolfman and illustrated by the also legendary George Perez, the story centers on a villain named Anti-Monitor. This character is the reverse of The Monitor, who was introduced in last year’sElseworldsevent. Anti-Monitor aims to destroy all life within the multiverse. On his quest, he comes up against many of DC’s most famous heroes. The event is notable for including the deaths of both The Flash and Supergirl.
There will be at least two other Supermans involved in this year’s crossover, as Tyler Hoechlin (Supergirl) and Tom Welling (Smallville) will also be appearing across the five-night event.Crisis on Infinite Earthskicks off in December and will include episodes ofSupergirl,Batwoman,Arrow,The FlashandLegends of Tomorrow.
