Long beforeAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.debuted on ABC back in 2013, it was confirmed that the show will be a part of theMarvelCinematic Universe, bringing backClark Greggas Agent Coulson, who was presumed to be dead afterMarvel’s The Avengers. The show has featured a number of stars from the MCU, such asSamuel L. Jackson(Nick Fury),Cobie Smulders(Maria Hill) andJaimie Alexander(Lady Sif), but the show’s biggest connection to the MCU happened in the aftermath ofCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, where S.H.I.E.L.D. was dismantled after it was learned that Hydra had infiltrated the organization decades ago. Executive producer Jed Whedon revealed in an interview withThe Hollywood Reporterthat the upcomingPhase ThreemovieCaptain America: Civil Warwill most certainly also have an impact on the show.
“It will definitely have a ripple effect. It is one world, so if there is a giant event, it will definitely have a ripple effect on our world.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.recently returned from its midseason hiatus to kick off the back half ofSeason 3, and while ABC hasn’t announced when theseason finalewill air, it will likely happen after the May 6 release ofCaptain America: Civil War. If the show continues its run of episodes uninterrupted, the season finale will air on Tuesday, May 24, leaving plenty of time for the show to address the events ofCaptain America: Civil War. Since the movie showcases all of the MCU heroes siding with eitherCaptain America(Chris Evans) orIron Man(Robert Downey Jr.),Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.starClark Greggwas asked what side his Agent Coulson character, a die-hard Captain America fan, would pick. Here’s what he had to say below.
“It’s a good question. I don’t know yet. I haven’t seen the film. I think the Coulson from some of the earlier films, especially, would have just been, ‘Wherever Steve Rogers goes, I’m going to be there with my cards, and at some point, I’m going to get them signed.’ But what’s amazing about doing this character for 70 episodes of television, and putting him at the lead of a no-longer-existing SHIELD that’s hunted around the world, is that you get a very different perspective. I think it’s really going to depend, at such time as Coulson actually has to deal with what’s going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on what has happened here, between now and then, because here is where his focus is right now.”
Fans will also most likely be paying attention to the episodes ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.leading intoCaptain America: Civil Waras well. The episode ofAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.right beforeCaptain America: The Winter Soldierfeatured Maximilliano Hernandez’s Jasper Sitwell, who teased that he was leaving on a new mission, and we then saw him in the movie’s opening scenes, as a hostage aboard The Lemurian Star. Do you have any theories about howAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.will cross over withCaptain America: Civil War?
