It is always hard to guess where the Marvel Cinematic Universe may go in the future, and whenThor: Love and Thunderwas announced in 2019 it was a surprise to many fans because with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America and at that point Thor, three seemed to be the magic number when it comes to solo movies for the franchise’s biggest heroes.Chris Hemsworth’sGod of Thunder therefore became the first character to be given a fourth solo outing, and having found his groove inThor: Ragnarok, it is not surprising that having lost Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Marvel would want to give one of their remaining original stars another crack of the whip.
Chris Hemsworth will have made major appearances in eight movies whenThor: Love and Thunderarrives next year, but where the Australian actor’s Marvel future lies beyond that is pretty much unknown. While the actor said last year that the film won’t be his final Marvel movie, the recent suggestion that a new Spider-Man trilogy is in the works led to Hemsworth fielding questions about a similar thing coming his way in the franchise when he appeared on The Today Show in Australia. He responded to the questions saying:

“How many Spider-Mans has he done? He’s a little behind me. I think he’s done three, I’ve done six or seven Thors, so maybe. As long as they’ll have me, I’ll turn up, but I feel like they might be waning that kind of enthusiasm for me to keep going.”
While fans of Hemsworth’s Avenger will strongly disagree with the notion that anyone is getting bored of the character, the real question is where Thor could turn up next and when. Marvel’s schedule is already full until well into 2023 and with the likes ofBlade, Fantastic Four, X-Menand more already planned for the coming years, where they could fit another Thor movie is the quandary that could be instrumental in whether we do getThor 5or not. However, in the MCU there are many opportunities for characters to pop in and out of any movie or TV series, and never more than now with the introduction of the multiverse. It is also worth remembering that a second season ofLokiis coming at some point, and who wouldn’t be up for the Asgardian brothers to be reunited again.
For now, what we do know is that in the final moments ofAvengers: EndgameThor was seen departing with the Guardians of the Galaxy after leaving New Asgard in the capable hands of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. We already know that certain members of the Guardians team, including Chris Pratt’s Peter “Starlord” Quill and Karen Gillan’s Nebula, will be featuring the film in some way. While we really have no idea of the main plot ofThor: Love and Thunderoutside the return of Natalie Portman to the franchise, who will be taking up her own hammer in the movie, and Christian Bale as antagonist Gorr the God Butcher, it is safe to say that director Taika Waititi will be bringing the same flair that brought Thor out of the dark and into the retro, bright colored light inThor: Ragnarok, and we cannot wait.Thor: Love and Thunderwill be the second Marvel Cinematic Universe offering of 2022 when it arrives on June 8th.
