Netflix’s biggest action movie franchise is set to make a big comeback, according to its leading star,Chris Hemsworth. Action movies are great, but action movies made by stunt performers are on a whole other level. That’s what Netflix brought to the proverbial table in 2020 withExtraction. Starring Hemsworth as mercenary Tyler Rake, the film was ball-to-the-wall action, including a gigantic one-take sequence, and plenty ofJohn Wick-inspired action. A sequel, aptly titledExtraction 2, was released in 2023 and brought more of the same kick-ass action, and fans have been desperate for Hemsworth to return for a third installment (presumably titledExtraction 3) in the franchise. Thankfully, we might not be waiting too long.
During a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporterto promote the new season of his docuseries,Limitless: Live Better Now, Chris Hemsworth addressed the future of theExtractionfranchise and where Tyler Rake could go next. “He’s getting restless,” Hemsworth said of his inner itch to return as Tyler Rake. “He is. My inner Tyler Rake is feeling a certain amount of protest and needs to be released, for sure.”
As for theactual status ofExtraction 3,Netflix previously announced that the film had been greenlit. Now, Hemsworth has revealed that the threequel is in active development at the streamer. “That’s something we are working on, yeah,” he continued. “We, the creative team, are putting together some different ideas and creative ventures of where we could take the whole place and the [third] film. But the intention is to certainly make another one. I don’t know exactly when, but yeah, it’ll be coming.”
What To Expect From ‘Extraction 3’
Directed by former Captain America stunt double Sam Hargrave, and written by the Russo Brothers and Ande Parks,Extractionfollows Tyler Rakeas he is dropped into Bangladesh to rescue the son of a notorious crime lord. What follows is 116 minutes of pure action as he must fight his way out of the city’s bustling streets to get the kid to safety.Extraction 2upped the ante in 2023, including a much longer one-take fight scene in a prison courtyard as Rake once again had to rescue the innocent family of a dangerous crime boss, this time in Russia. With the sequel taking a massive step up in terms of production scale, fans are hopingExtraction 3will follow suit and go even grander.
Plot details forExtraction 3haven’t been revealed.Aside from Chris Hemsworth, the film’s cast hasn’t yet been revealed.Extraction 2teased that Idris Elba would have a much larger role in the threequel, but his return hasn’t been officially confirmed. Whatever the plot ofExtraction 3will be, expect the stunts to be even crazier than before. The past two films included insane hallway fights, driving sequences, and landing a helicopter on top of a moving train. It’s hard to see howExtraction 3can top that. But with the kind of funding that Netflix pumps into movies, the sky is the limit.
