A new Wednesday Addams is coming to Netflix this fall and she has gotten the blessing of a prior Wednesday. Directed by Tim Burton making his small screen debut,WednesdaystarsJenna Ortegaas a new incarnation of the character made famous byThe Addams Family. This new spinoff will put Wednesday into the central role the other Addamses slipping into supporting roles, bringing an all-new take to the franchise.
Many fans ofThe Addams Familyare still quite fond of the original live-action movies which featuredChristina Ricciin the Wednesday Addams role. Ricci has since been cast in a supporting role inWednesdayand was able to see first-hand her successor in action. Speaking about the series in a new interview, viaVariety, Ricci described the production as “very fun” and had some glowing things to say about Ortega as Wednesday.
“It’s super fun. I loved working with Tim [Burton]. I worked with Gwendolyn Christie, it was amazing. And Jenna is incredible. I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I went [to set] so I knew [what she looked like in character] and I was like, it’s such a great modern take on Wednesday. It’s so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but then it’s incredibly modern and it’s great.”
Fans were recently treated to their first official look at Ortega as Wednesday with a teaser video released by Netflix for its Geeked Week event. The series is expected to arrive this fall but Netflix has not officially announced a premiere date. Most likely it will arrive just in time for the Halloween season, if not before.

Jenna Ortega Brings a New Take on Wednesday Addams With the Netflix Series
Jenna Ortega has previously spoken out about why it was important for her to take on the role of Wednesday Addams. She explained that the character was created as Latina, that hasn’t been depicted in a live-action adaptation. Ortega hopes that her casting inWednesdaywill be seen as an inspiration to others, happy with the representation that the new series brings to theAddams Familyfranchise. As she toldEmpire:
“A big part of the reason I signed on is because she’s technically a Latina character and that’s never been shown or represented. As someone who struggled, and still struggles to this day, with some sort of feeling of representation or relatability in mainstream media and film and television, I recognized this was an opportunity for me to… give that relatability to other girls like myself. Looking the way I do and having the cultural background I have, there aren’t many iconic characters out there. So when an opportunity like this comes up – she’s someone I’ve been compared to my whole life, just because of my humor and dry nature, so it just seemed fitting. I thought that would be a nice way to flex my muscles in a different way.”
