Over theweekend, it was heavily rumored thatChristopher Nolan’s next movie will be set during World War II and is based on a true story. Now,Varietyreports that is true. Theaction-thriller, which is set for release in July 2017, is titledDunkirkand will take the director to France.

Christopher Nolan is directingDunkirkfrom his ownoriginal screenplay. The cast is said to be made up of mostly unknowns, with no casting locked in yet. The supporting cast will likely center aroundTom Hardy,Mark RylanceandKenneth Branagh, all of whom are currently said to be in talks for the project. Christopher Nolan is producing the project with longtime partnerEmma Thomas.

Based on real events, the story behindDunkirktakes place during WWI, and is set during the historical evcecauation of the Northern French City. Christopher Nolan and his team have already begun casting teenagers in London for the main roles. The director is said to have wanted to lock down the select adult roles before the Christmas holiday, but the trio mentioned above has not been confirmed byWarner Bros. Studiosat this time. Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman had this to say about the movie.

“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time. Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

Dunkirkwill be a large-scale production. The director will be shooting the movie using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film. Christopher Nolan wants maximum image quality, and high-impact immersion in telling his next story.Dunkirkbegins shooting in May, and will utilize many of the real locations where this true piece of war history happened.
