The “evil clown” featureClown in a Cornfieldhas landed in theaters, givinghorrorfans another reason to be scared of the circus performers. And if you think Frendo, the clown wielding chainsaws and knives, is just another pale imitation of those who have come before him, then perhaps the recent comments by starKevin Durandwill convince you otherwise. He was asked where Frendo stands when compared to other wicked clowns in the horror movie universe, and his answer shouldn’t be a surprise.

Recently, Durand sat down withComic Bookto talk about his role as Arthur Hill in the horror comedyClown in a Cornfield. Durand, also known for his roles in the TV seriesLostand The Strain, as well as films likeAbigail, did not spoil any important details about the upcoming movie, but he was kind enough to rank Frendo among the others clowns in the genre:

Tim Curry in IT.

“I’m obviously a little sided. I’ve got to put Frendo climbing to the peak of the group. I can’t divulge why. People are going to have to go to the theater on May 9 and figure out why I think he’s at the peak. He’s the pinnacle. Bring it on.”

The Scariest Clowns in Movie History, Ranked

Whether you have a fear of clowns or love them, there have been some seriously creepy portrayals of clowns in film throughout the years.

Durand doesn’t even flinch when staying silent about what makes Frendo so special among his peers, which include Pennywise, Art the Clown and even Captain Spaulding. This is something you will have to discover for yourself halfway through the movie when the scary slasher turnsinto a completely different thing.

Clown in a Cornfieldis directed by Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil), from a script he co-wrote with Carter Blanchard. It is based on Adam Cesare’s novel of the same name, which won the 2020 Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel. The book was very successful upon release, and it spawned two sequels. Cesare recently revealed that he’s working on a fourth entry.

“This Is So Far Beyond What I Hoped It Would Be”

Durand seems tailor-made for his role in thehighly-expected “killer clown” movie. Yes, Arthur Hill matches the actor’s signature physicality, but make no mistake. Durand is also a very interesting performer who’s more than just a well-built dude who almost always plays villains. InClown in a Cornfield, he once again displays his acting chops, as well as his skill at giving life to hilarious characters. This is what Durand said of his preparation for the movie:

“I had received an offer from my manager, it was really funny. She was like, ‘I don’t know about the title, it’s called Clown in a Cornfield.’ I was like, ‘I have to read that. What is this?’ And I read it and I was like, ‘Oh, wow, this is so much more than I had thought it would be.’ It’s just so perfectly executed on the page. The humor was the thing that was probably the most attractive to me about it.

“Eli Craig just does this masterful job of relieving pressure every once in a while with a really great chuckle, and I just feel like, honestly, when I saw it at South by Southwest, I was like, ‘This is so far beyond what I hoped it would be.’ And people were just falling out of their chairs, terrified, and just slapping each other, laughing. It was fantastic.”
