The Walking Deadrecently came to an end, but as the franchise moves on through its various spinoffs, fans still haven’t seen the last of many of their favorite characters. For years,Danai Gurira’s Michonne andAndrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes had served as two of the TV show’s most popular characters. Both wound up leaving the series as main cast members, but it was later announced that they’d reunite after the end ofThe Walking Deadto conclude the story of Richonne with a separate limited series.

Taking toInstagramon New Year’s Day, Gurira announced that pre-production has officially begun on the spinoff. She posted some images of herself reuniting with Lincoln as well asWalking Deadboss Scott M. Gimple. It seems the series is on track to arrive later in 2023, as Gurira also recently teased.

Gurira previously spoke about the project and revealed how she was also involved creatively in addition to starring as Michonne. She also teased that the series would be an “epic love story” for these two characters. How things will end for them remains to be seen, but getting the two back together for the spinoff piqued many fans' interest.

“I co-created it with Scott Gimple and [Andrew] Lincoln, and we’re having a great time,” Gurira told Deadline. “It’s a lot of work though, a lot of work. Well it’s an epic love story. It’s a love story between Rick and Michonne, as we know that they were together and got separated. So this is that story, that journey between the two of them with a very raging world around them.”

Originally, the plan was forLincoln to star in a trilogy of moviesthat tied into the TV show, but at some point, the idea was made to adapt the story as a limited series. It was announced that the series would “begin with six episodes,” seemingly leaving the door open for additional episodes to be ordered. Previously released artwork featuring a familiar sword was also dropped when the spinoff was first announced.

The Walking Dead’s Richonne spinoff is expected to arrive on AMC in the back half of 2023. A premiere date hasn’t yet been announced.
