Today is the day many comic book fans have been waiting for, withDeadpoolfinally hitting theaters nationwide. StarRyan Reynoldshad been trying to get this comic book adaptation off the ground for nearly a decade, and it’s been nearly six years since screenwritersRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickcame aboard. The writers actually stayed on board through the entire development and production process, which is rare for screenwriters these days. Of course, scripts will often change quite a bit, especially with a development process as lengthy as this project, and writerRhett ReesetoldCinemaBlendthat the movie almost had three more villains from theMarvel Comics. Here’s what the writer had to say below.

“We consolidated, in the first draft,Ajax(Ed Skrein) has really three underlings. It was Wyre, it was Garrison Kane and it was Sluggo. And then ultimately due to budget, we had to consolidate those into one character. And we wanted the movie to have a really strong kick-ass female presence. That was a mandate from (director)Tim (Miller), so we introduced, we introducedAngel Dustas sort of a combination of those three to provide the muscle for Ajax.”

None of these comic book characters have been seen on the big screen before, soDeadpoolwould have marked their movie debut. Wyre is a mutant who has the ability to control strong tendrils of fiber that protrude from his body. Much likeWolverine, Wyre has regenerative powers, along with super strength, speed and he possesses an expert knowledge of weapons and combat. Garrison Kane is also known as Weapon X, and was actually created byDeadpoolcreatorsRob LiefeldandFabian Niciezain 1991, who was a former member ofX-Forceleader Cable’s mercenary team known as Six-Pack. Kane is a cyborg with metal arms who was created in the Weapon X program.

In the comics, Sluggo was actually part of the Weapon X program and trained with Wade Wilson. He has a unique mutant ability that makes him essentially invulnerable to any form of physical injury. Since none of these characters were used inDeadpool, it’s completely possible that we may see them inDeadpool 2. We reported earlier this week that the secret post-credit sequence reveals thatCablewill be featured in the sequel, which will be written byRhett ReeseandPaul Wernick.

Ryan Reynoldswill most certainly be back as the Merc With the Mouth inDeadpool 2, but it isn’t known if any otherDeadpoolstars will be back, or what other comic book characters may be included in the sequel.
