Back in July, more than one full year afterEdge of Tomorrowhit theaters in summer 2014, starTom Cruiseteased that a sequel may be in the works, having pitched an idea to directorDoug Limanand screenwriterChristopher McQuarrie. We haven’t heard anything official regarding this follow-up since then. But today, we have word thatEdge of Tomorrow 2is moving forward, withDeadlinereporting that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to write the script.Christopher McQuarrieis in talks to produce and develop the script with the new writers.

Edge of Tomorrowis set in the future, where a war has been unfolding between humans and an invading alien race.Tom Cruiseplays Major William Cage, an officer who has never seen a day of combat and is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again.Emily Bluntplays Special Forces soldier Rita Vrataski, who helps Cage become a better warrior as they try to win this seemingly never-ending battle. The supporting cast includesBrendan Gleeson,Bill Paxton, Jonas Armstrong, Dragomir Mrsic andCharlotte Riley.

Edge of Tomorrowenjoyed wide critical acclaim, scoring an impressive 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but those glowing reviews didn’t lead to overwhelming success at thebox office, with the movie earning just $100.2 million domestic. It fared much better overseas with $270.3 million for a worldwide tally of $370.5 million from a $178 million budget. Noplot detailswere given for the sequel, and it isn’t known ifEmily Bluntor any of the other original cast members will be back forEdge of Tomorrow 2.

Doug Limanwill return to direct thesequel, with Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally set to produce alongsideChristopher McQuarrie. No production schedule was given, and Warner Bros. hasn’t set arelease datefor the sequel at this time.Tom Cruiseis currently shooting theUntitled Mummy Rebootfor Universal Pictures, and we reported last year that the actor will start shootingMission: Impossible 6this summer.
