Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Toldis a documentary series about the rise and unfortunate fall of an Atlanta HBCU picnic that expanded into an annual festival and street party highlighting Atlanta as a major cultural hub for the Black community. Conceived in March 1982, the event garnered its name from the meshing of the words freaky and picnic and was inspired by the song “Le Freak” by Chic.
As the event outgrew its initial concept and a heightened police presence began to infiltrate the celebration, support for the event dwindled, and the event was eventually banned in the late ’90s.
