Now that Warner Bros.' highly-anticipatedHarry Potterspin-offFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themhas hit theaters, new details are emerging about this magical adventure, and the sequel that will follow it. ProducerDavid Heyman, who previously served as a producer on all eightHarry Pottermovies, revealed that they actually shot a much different ending, which teases the fate of a main character while also setting upFantastic Beasts 2. There will be SPOILERS forFantastic Beasts and Where to Find them Below, so read on at your own risk.
We reported earlier this month thatJohnny Deppis playing the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and that he would have a brief appearance inFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, before returning in a larger role forFantastic Beasts 2. At the end of the film, it was revealed that Gellert Grindelwald was actually disguising himself asColin Farrell’s character, Percival Graves. It was also believed thatEzra Miller’s character Credence Barebone was killed, but producerDavid Heymanrevealed toCinemaBlendthat the original ending they shot for this movie showed thatCredence Bareboneis in fact alive and well. Here’s what the producer had to say below.
“We actually had a scene, which we cut, which was Credence going to a boat, to get on a boat somewhere else. But we cut that, because we didn’t want to have it be such an, ‘Ahhh, here we go.’ Him getting on a boat, maybe a boat with Newt, maybe not, and heading off out of New York.”
Earlier this month, directorDavid Yates, who is returning to the helm forFantastic Beasts 2, confirmed that the sequel will be set in Paris, which is most likely where Newt and Credence were sailing off to in this deleted scene. While magizoologist Newt Scamander is certainly the main character in this movie,David Heymanhinted that Newt may not be “at the heart” of all the follow-ups. Here’s what the producer had to say, teasing some of the characters that will be back forFantastic Beasts 2.
“I don’t think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them. I think he’ll be part – so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob – will be part of the next one. And Credence andGrindelwald. I think they will be the main players.”
In the originalHarry Potterstories, Gellert Grindelwald was mentioned as a former friend of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, who has also been confirmed forFantastic Beasts 2. The filmmakers have yet to cast the young Albus Dumbledore at this time, and it hasn’t been confirmed when production will begin yet, although the studio has set a July 31, 2025 release date.
