Ben Browder Dishes on a ‘Farscape’ Sequel Amid Anniversary Marathon

For the show’s 26th anniversary, Ben Browder discussed how far sci-fi has come and his desire for a Farscape sequel.

Farscape Was Canceled but a Sequel Is Teased

Farscapewas planned for a total of five seasons but was abruptly canceled by the Sci-Fi Channel after production wrapped on season four. The reason being a split betweendeclining viewership and expensive production cost. It was here when Henson stepped in, purchasing the rights to the series and developingFarscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. Peacekeeper Wars served as the finale, wrapping up the cliffhanger ending of season four and giving a proper conclusion.

Despite the abrupt ending,Farscapegrew a strong cult following over the years that is still as loyal as ever before. The series was praised by critics and audiences for its puppetry, special effects, and purposeful straying from the usualStar Trekformula. The show continues to inspire creators to this day, like James Gunn, who creditsFarscapeas an inspiration for hisGuardians of the Galaxyfilms. There may still be a future forFarscape, though. When we spoke with creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, he said:

Farscape TV Series Poster

“Look, the uncharted territories where the show takes place, it’s just an outrageously expansive place, and over the course of the four years of this series, we discovered a lot of species, and then I did do a comic book series some few years ago. That was a continuation of the story. Because it was in comic book form, [it] allowed me to kind of introduce some of the bigger concepts and go to places that we just could not afford to in the TV series. That was very freeing to do it in the comic book form.”

“So we’ve been talking to Brian Henson a lot,” added O’Bannon, “and have been over the years about bringing backFarscapeand kind of how best to do that. And yeah, we’re very aware of what Buffy has been doing. I would love to get another television series on, right? But that’s always kind of fraught, particularly now.”
