The Dearge Due

The legend, according toThe Irish Road Trip, goes like this. The Dearge Due was once a beautiful woman living in Waterford who fell in love with one of the local men. The only problem was that her love was poor, and this was a time when arranged marriages were common. The woman’s cruel father was determined to have her wed to someone who would pay handsomely for her and would never allow her to marry a peasant.

Instead, the father arranged for his daughter to be married to the local chieftain in exchange for land and riches. Never mind his reputation for cruelty. The daughter was obviously unhappy with this, but she couldn’t defy her father. So the two of them were wed, but the marriage was an unhappy one. The chieftain treated her like a trophy and had her locked away at his leisure.

Eventually, the woman stopped eating and drinking altogether until she finally passed away. Despite her husband’s wealth, her funeral was cheap. Neither the father nor the chieftain were very cut up about what had happened either. Except, the woman’s spirit, so filled with rage over what had happened, rose from her grave to exact her revenge.

First, she killed her father, then her husband, the latter of whom’s blood she drank. After that, the Dearge Due or Red Blood Sucker would use her great beauty tolure unsuspecting young meninto her trap. However, with each victim she stood, the more hungry she grew. Eventually, she just disappeared. Where did she go? Well, it seemsFeedis going to answer that.
