Back in October, we reported that Paramount Pictures has delayed their long-awaitedFriday the 13thonce again, pushing the release date from June 16, 2025 to June 27, 2025. While it still isn’t known when production will begin,The Wrapreports that the studio is in talks with screenwriterAaron Guzikowski(Prisoners) to rewrite the script, while directorDavid Brucknerhas left the reboot. While it’s still possible that he may come back to direct, the filmmaker is now free to pursue other options.
David Brucknercame aboard back in April 2014, when the project was slated for release on June 10, 2025. Since then, therelease datehas been shifted three times, first to June 18, 2025, then to June 04, 2025 before landing on its current date of July 23, 2025. The site reports that the producers at Platinum Dunes felt it wasn’t fair to ask the filmmaker to keep waiting while they develop a new draft of the screenplay. The producers still plan to go back toDavid Bruckneronce the new script is ready, but as of now, he isn’t attached to the reboot.
Damian ShannonandMark Swift, who wrote the 2009Friday the 13threboot for Platinum Dunes, were first tasked with writing the script, with Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg also writing a draft as well. This March,Hannibalstaff writerNick Antoscacame aboard to write a new draft, which was set in the 1980s. It isn’t clear ifAaron Guzikowskiwill start completely from scratch, butBloody-Disgustingreports that the studio is now eyeing a modern take on the franchise.
Platinum Dunes producersMichael Bay,Bradley FullerandAndrew Formhad originally planned on making afound footageversion ofFriday the 13th, but that idea was scrapped earlier this year after the producers couldn’t figure out the story. It also isn’t known if the filmmakers plan on bringing backDerek Mears, who portrayed the iconicJason Voorheesin the 2009Friday the 13threboot. We also reported in August that The CW is developing aFriday the 13thtelevision series, but Platinum Dunes is not involved in that project.
