HBO’sWestworldhas become the network’s next big hit, with theseries premiereluring in a whopping 12 million viewers, including streaming, on demand and DVR figures. That figure is higher than even the first seasons ofGame of ThronesandTrue Detective, and, speaking ofGame of Thrones, some fans have started formulating crossover possibilities between both shows. While it seems unlikely that a crossover betweenWestworldandGame of Throneswould ever actually happen, it seems thatGame of ThronesauthorGeorge R.R. Martincame up with a crossover idea.
Entertainment Weeklycaught up with executive producerJonathan Nolan, who also co-created the series with his wifeLisa Joy, who revealed thatGeorge R.R. Martinactually pitched a crossover similar to the one fans have been suggesting. In the originalWestworldmovie, there were several different worlds aside from an Old West theme park, including a Medieval World, which could be used to showcase Westeros in theWestworldTV series, in theory. Apparently,George R.R. Martinmentioned the crossover over dinner a few months ago, according toJonathan Nolan. Here’s what he had to say below.
“We love George and our daughter’s first trip anywhere in the world was out to Santa Fe for a screening of The Prestige at his theater, the Jean Cocteau. He’s a lovely guy and astunning writerand it’s flattering he would encourage a crossover. We should be so lucky.”
The crossover between both shows was compared to Disney creating a new theme park based on their blockbusterStar Warsfranchise, except, naturally, there wouldn’t be all of thesex and violenceshown in bothWestworldandGame of Thrones. It would even allow HBO to resurrect belovedGame of Thronescharacters such as Ned Stark (Sean Bean) and Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).Jonathan Nolanwouldn’t confirm any sort of crossover, but he isn’t ruling it out either.
“We’ve got an awful lot of material to cover just withWestworld, but you want to stay tuned…”
As forLisa Joy, her biggest issue with a potential crossover is that she needs to “believe that dragons are real,” and as much as she lovesGeorge, she “can’t lose that for myself.“Game of Thronesis currently filming its seventh season, which will air next summer, with the eighth season slated to be its last. If thesci-fiseriesWestworldkeeps growing in popularity, perhaps the creators will eventually explore a crossover withGame of Thrones, but that will likely be far down the line from now.
