Gareth Edwards is one of the most underrated sci-fi directors currently working. The director behindRogue OneandGodzilladecided to ditch the mainstream IP when he released an original sci-fi movie last year. The Creatorstarred John David Washington, and was set in a techno-futuristic world where humanoid robots are an everyday part of life. But, when a company develops a fully functional AI, the US government sees it as a potential weapon, and orders its termination, no matter the collateral damage.

The Creatoris currently streaming on Prime Video and has found massive success on the streamer. The film entered Prime Video’s top 10 the day it arrived on the platform. WhileThe Creatorhas been a massive streaming success, its fate was less than stellar at the box office last year. As much as audiences bemoan IP-based movies and beg for original stories, they don’t always show their support in theaters. The Creatorjust broke past the $100 million at the global box office from its theatrical run, just surpassing its $80 million budget. The official synopsis for the film reads:

Still from Jurassic World Rebirth.

“As a future war between the human race and artificial intelligence rages on, ex-special forces agent Joshua is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI. The Creator has developed a mysterious weapon that has the power to end the war and all of mankind. As Joshua and his team of elite operatives venture into enemy-occupied territory, they soon discover the world-ending weapon is actually an AI in the form of a young child.”

Some believe its financial failure came from audiences' trepidation regarding an original concept sci-fi film. However, it can also be chalked up to the average reviews the film garnered. The Creatorholds a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes.MovieWeb’s Julian Roman scored it a 3.5/5.While they praised Edwards' attempt to tell a sci-fi-facaded version ofDances with Wolveswith AI, the true spectacle ofThe Creatoris in its action and CGI. “Audiences can ignore the philosophical underpinnings to watch lots of stuff spectacularly explode,” they wrote.
