It is an interesting time to be aGhostbustersfan. On one hand, Sony is very dedicated to making something out of the franchise in the modern day, with an all-femalePaul Feigdirected reboot heading to theaters next month. On the other hand, many people are upset about the reboot for various reasons and are worried that the new movie will sort of soil what is great about the originals. Also, it means we will never get the trueGhostbusters 3movie that everyone wanted.
HardcoreGhostbusters fansvery likely played, or at least watched a friend play, the 2009Ghostbustersvideo game because in a lot ways, it was the sequel that fans had been waiting for ever sinceGhostbusters II. A YouTuber recently took it upon himself to take the story ofGhostbusters: The Video Gameand edit it into a full-length movie. The video is now up on hisYouTubechannel under the titleGhostbusters III - The Video Game Movie, and it is pretty impressive. Here is what the video’s creator had to say about it in the description.

“Let’s face it folks, our beloved Harold Ramis is no longer with us. That means we lost a legendary actor, writer, director and a great human being. This also means that there will never be a true Ghostbusters III movie unfortunately…What I have done here for your viewing pleasure is put together a compilation of cutscenes and gameplay from the game to collaborate the story line into a feature length movie that I simply call “Ghostbusters III” and I think it turned out pretty darn well. All video was recorded on a high end PC at max settings and enhanced with video editing at full blu-ray quality.”
The final video clocks in at 182 minutes, which is a bit long, but not nearly as long as playing the game itself. Many consideredGhostbusters: The Video Gameto be the unofficial sequel toGhostbusters IIanyway, but this video really helps to cement why that is. The plot takes place in 1991, two years after the events of the previous movie. The Ghostbusters are now training a new recruit when ghosts get released all over the city, and it is up to the whole gang and their new member to clean up the mess. What’s more is that the entire original cast voiced their characters for the game, plusDan AykroydandHarold Ramishelped with the script.

Aykroydhad been trying to get a newGhostbustersmovie made for years and in recent years leading up to the currentreboot, there were a lot of different creatives working on it.Max Landiswrote a draft of the movie that was reportedly very close to getting the green light whenPaul Feigpitched Sony the idea of the all-female version, which ultimately won out. With it being a reboot, that extinguishes any hope fans had of ever seeing a real dealGhostbusters 3, but this video may help to ease the pain a bit.
How the creators ofGhostbusters: The Video Gamemanaged to get together the entire creative team necessary to make a properGhostbusters sequel, yet the guys could never seem to make the movie happen is beyond anyone. But, the game does serve as a nice extension of theGhostbusters universefor fans and this painstaking fan edit is great for those who just want to get the story and not necessarily play the game.
