Several new images from the set of theupcomingGhostbusters: Afterlifesequelreveal the return of an originalGhostbustersstar. If you wish to remain unspoiled then please, look away now. Gone? Good. The star in question is none other than William Atherton, who will reprise the role of the overzealous, pain in the neck Environmental Protection Agency inspector Walter Peck. Check out the first look at Atherton’s triumphant (yet no doubt irritating) return below.
William Atherton’s character has not been seen since being proven sort of right during the events of the very firstGhostbustersouting back in 1984 and no doubt confirmation of his comeback will have fans even more excited for the sequel. Revealed viaTwitter user Michigan Ghostbusters, the images from filming also reveal our first look at Ernie Hudson’s return as Winston Zeddemore, who was spotted alongside what appears to be a Ghostbuster suit-wearing Paul Rudd, who will reprise his role fromGhostbusters: Afterlifeas science teacher Gary Grooberson.

Released in 2021,Ghostbusters: Afterlifepicks up thirty years after the 1989 sequelGhostbusters IIand follows a family who move to a small town, where they discover their familial connection to the original ghost-busting team. The nostalgia-heavy legacy sequel was well-received by both critics and audiences alike, grossing $204 million worldwide against a production budget of $75 million. An as-yet-untitled sequel was announced last year, withA Boy Called Christmasdirector andGhostbusters: Afterlifewriter Gil Kenanset to helm the project.
“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” Kenan, who has written theGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel alongside Jason Reitman said of the follow-up. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Will Take the Action Back to New York City
Details regarding the plot of theGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel are currently under wraps, but it has been revealed that Winston Zeddemorewill feature heavily in the return. “The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters,” Jason Reitman said previously, before revealing that he did discuss sequel ideas with his father, Ivan Reitman, before he passed away.
The sequel will also take the ghost-busting actionback to New York City. “At the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home,” Reitman revealed. “And before anyone ever heard the title Afterlife, we called it Rust City. Which would not have made sense to anyone until they saw the movie. The code name for the next movie is ‘Firehouse.’”
Starring Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Ernie Hudson, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind, the untitledGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on July 08, 2025.
