Everybody Wants Some Is an Exploration of Male Friendships

DirectorLinklater has calledEverybody Wants Some!!a spiritual sequel to two of his earlier films,Dazed and ConfusedandBoyhood. WhereasDazed and Confusedchronicles the last day of high school,Everybody Wants Some!!is the countdown of the last fun-filled hours leading up to when classes begin. In an interview withGQ, Linklater called the film a “strange continuation” of his earlier filmBoyhood. “It starts whereBoyhoodends.” However, instead of the focus being on one character’s journey into adulthood,Everybody Wants Some!!is an ensemble film about male bonding and the workings of interpersonal relationships. “This is about that kind of jock, swagger, assertive male behavior,” Linklater said.

Everybody Wants Some Trailer: Dazed and Confused Meets the 80s

Director Richard Linklater returns with a Everybody Wants Some, a ‘spiritual sequel’ to Dazed and Confused set in the 1980s.

The film is based on Linklater’s real-life experiences growing up and attending school in Texas. In an interview withThe Independent, he states thatit was important to him to cast former athletesin the rolesso that they might bring their own experiences to their characters. Many of the main cast members have backgrounds in various sports, including mixed martial arts, football, baseball, and wrestling. This previous experience helps build the camaraderie of the cat of the main character, Jake, who is enfolded and assimilated into the team, which is the heart of theplot-thin character-rich film.

Everybody Wants Some Is About a Last Grasp at Freedom

LikeDazed and Confused,Everybody Wants Some!!focuses on the exuberant social life of the main characters. Along with Powell and Jenner, the movie stars Tyler Hoechlin (Superman & Lois), Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead) as fellow housemates and members of the college baseball team. Over the course of the movie, the team follows all manner of rambunctious ambitions as a last energetic hurrah before the school season starts. From fist fights at the disco to line dancing and bull riding at a cowboy bar, the group runs headlong and eager into each new adventure’s (and willing girl’s) arms.

Although Jake (Jenner) is the main protagonist, the film is very muchan ensemble piece. Along with the previously mentioned, the cast also includes Ryan Guzman, Temple Baker, J. Quinton Johnson, and Will Brittain. With so many prominent figures at its center, the film could easily lose its voice and focus. However, under the direction of Linklater, the characters admirably maintain their autonomy without sacrificing the group feel. The partnership of the cast has a natural energy that makes their developing friendship a comfort for the viewer.

Everybody Wants Some Review: This 80s Party Is a Blast

Director Richard Linklater returns to form with another lighthearted, supremely enjoyable tale of youth in Everybody Wants Some.

Everybody Wants Some!!received a positive critical reception. The film has an 87% certified fresh rating with critics and was received positively by the audience with a 68% fresh review. However, the film struggled to find its audience due in part to its limited release, which saw it take in less than half of its reported $10 million budget. The critical consensus of Rotten Tomatoes called the film “nostalgic in the best sense,” and it’s arguablyLinklater’s most underrated movie. Although the film is light on plot, it remains an interesting and gently intriguing character study that examines how different personalities create the mechanism of a well-formed team.
