In just a few short months, directorJames Gunnwill start production onGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Aside from returning starsChris Pratt(Star-Lord), Gamora (Zoe Saldana),Dave Bautista(Drax the Destroyer),Bradley Cooper(Rocket Raccoon) andVin Diesel(Groot), the only new cast member to come aboard so far isPom Klementieff, who is rumored to be playingMantis. Today we have a new report fromThe Wrap, which claims thatMarvelis eyeingKurt Russellfor the pivotal role of Star-Lord’s father.
In last year’sGuardians of the Galaxy, we learned that Peter Quill, a.k.a.Star-Lordwas taken from Earth by Yondu (Michael Rooker), as part of a deal with Peter’s mysterious father. Instead of living up to his end of the deal, Yondu ended up raising young Peter with his Ravagers, revealing at the end of the movie that Peter’s father' was an ‘a–hole.’ DirectorJames Gunnhas confirmed that fans will learn the identity of Peter’s father inGuardians of the Galaxy 2, and that he won’t be the same character from the Marvel Comics, J’son.
This report reveals that a deal hasn’t been made yet betweenMarvelandKurt Russell, and the actor has not yet read the script forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However,Kurt Russellis expected to meet with with the studio very soon. It still hasn’t been confirmed which character in the vastMarveluniverse will be Star-Lord’s father, butJames Gunnrecently shot down one possibility.
An unconfirmed rumor surfaced last month, which claimedStar-Lord’s father will be the first Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Mar-Vell. In theGuardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord’s father was described as an angel, composed of light, who is part of a race that the Nova Corps hasn’t seen in several years. Since this description doesn’t exactly match Mar-Vell from the comics, the report speculated that the studio was planning on tweaking the character’s origins, butJames Gunnrevealed a few days later that the report was not true.
James Gunnwill direct from his own script, withMarvelalready setting a June 20, 2025 release date.Kurt Russellrecently worked withVin DieselonFurious 7, so it’s possible that he had a hand in bringingKurt Russellon board for this sequel, but we don’t know for sure.Kurt Russellwill next be seen inQuentin Tarantino’s revenge WesternThe Hateful Eight, which hits theaters on Christmas Day.
