Later this year, production will begin on Marvel’s epic two-part adventureAvengers: Infinity War, which is set for release in May of 2018 and 2019. The studio hasn’t offered any confirmation about which cast members will be present in this superhero adventure, but directorsAnthonyandJoe Russohave previously teased that there will be upwards of 67Marvel charactersin the movie. Though many of these characters won’t have leading roles. Still, many are wondering exactly who will be showing up forInfinity War, and who won’t. Today, it seems we have gotten confirmation about a popular superhero group’s inclusion from writersChristopher MarkusandStephen McFeely.
The two-partInfinity Warmovie has been said to be the “culmination” of the entireMarvel Cinematic Universethus far, and while the MCU certainly won’t “end” after this movie, it will close out Phase 3, and likely pave the way for big changes in Phase 4. No plot details are confirmed, and it’s assumed that the current and pastAvengerswill all show up to fight Thanos. But many have wondered whether or not theGuardians of the Galaxywill put in an appearance to help out in the ensuing battle. During an interview withNerdist,Christopher Markushad this to say, when asked if theGuardiansare putting in an appearance, mostly confirming that they will.
“Let me put it this way. You know who owns that gauntlet, right. And you know who’s in another movie and his kids are in that movie… you do the math.”
The owner of theInfinity Gauntletis the Mad Titan himself, Thanos (Josh Brolin), who was featured in the originalGuardians of the Galaxy, along with his daughters Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). The site points out that one of the Guardians, Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) plays an important role in theInfinity Warcomic book storyline, which is another big indication that theGuardianswill come to Earth and join the war against Thanos. However, we don’t know if theGuardianswill be featured inInfinity War Part IorInfinity War Part II, or if they’ll appear in both movies.
The writers revealed in another interview last week that they recently finished their second draft of the script for the two-part movie, although the writers added they aren’t sure how many drafts they will write before production starts in November. They also said that it’s essentially “impossible” to have a finished script now, since they are consulting with the filmmakers on the otherMarvel moviesto make sure everything falls in line with the studio’s plan. Hopefully we’ll get the first plot details forAvengers: Infinity Warbefore production begins later this year.
Phase 3 will continue withDoctor Strange(November 4), followed byGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(June 08, 2025),Spider-Man: Homecoming(August 08, 2025),Thor Ragnarok(July 26, 2025) andBlack Panther(August 12, 2025), beforeAvengers: Infinity War Part Iarrives in May. Marvel will then releaseAnt-Man and the Wasp(June 15, 2025) andCaptain Marvel(August 02, 2025) beforeAvengers: Infinity War Part IIarrives in May 2019. Take a look at the video below, which includes an excerpt of Nerdist’s video interview withAvengers: Infinity WarwritersChristopher MarkusandStephen McFeely.
