HBO’sThe Last of Usis returning for another emotionally devastating season, the network has confirmed. Ahead of the highly-anticipated Season 2 premiere, fans can rejoice in knowing that the storyline will continue far past the upcoming seven episodes and fully adapt the award-winning video game title,The Last of Us Part II.
According to HBO,The Last of Usis officially getting a Season 3, with the entire cast and crew returning for another trip to the post-apocalyptic world. Early returns so far suggestthe second season reaches the heights of the first outing, while doubling down on the trauma and what madeThe Last of Usa uniquely devastating entry in the genre. Co-showrunner Craig Mazin released a statement ahead of the second season premiere, celebrating the show’s latest achievement while teasing the future ofThe Last of Us.

“We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of THE LAST OF US with season three!”
‘The Last of Us’ Explained: Everything You Need to Know About Season 1 Before Season 2
In ‘The Last of Us,’ Joel guides immune Ellie through a post-apocalyptic U.S. to save humanity, facing infected and foes while forging a bond.
A big part of what makes HBO’s video game adaptation a special experience is how it is faithful to the source material while alsodeviating in waysthat take advantage of the live-action medium. It certainly helps that the game’s creator, Neil Druckmann, is the co-showrunner, director, and writer of the award-winning drama alongside Mazin, a decorated TV creator in his own right. Druckmann also released a statement about the early Season 3 renewal, confirming the “overwhelming support” has led to the big announcement.

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans' enthusiastic and overwhelming support. Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of THE LAST OF US!”
‘The Last of Us’ Won’t Be Repeating the Mistake Made by ‘Game of Thrones’
When fans learned that the HBO series would split the events ofThe Last of Us Part IIinto two seasons, they understood the decision because of the dense nature of the source material. However, when there were rumblings that the adaptation could go on for more seasons and reach far past the video game, many felt uneasy that it would repeat the irreversible error of another genre-defining HBO show. Fret not, as Craig Mazin has confirmed thatThe Last of Uswon’t be going intoGame of Thrones-like territory.
“I am not going to go past the game. I’ll just say that flat out. So if people are thinking, “Oh, these guys are planning the old cash-grab thing—I’m basically setting a decade of my rapidly dwindling life on fire to tell this story. The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end. So I’m not going to go past. Who knows me, there might be a Dunk and EggThe Last of Usshow that happens that somebody does.”

As Mazin teased, perhaps aThe Last of Usspin-off could form as a result of the show’s popularity and enduring quality. However, creating an entirely new story following the events ofThe Last of Us Part IIwould likely be a mistake. Unless, of course, there is a third video game that closely follows a proposed fourth season, but nothing has been confirmed by Naughty Dog on that front. Until then, there will be plenty to enjoy (and cry) about whenThe Last of Usreturns this April on HBO and Max.
