While any movie’s opening weekend is incredibly important at thebox office, the second weekend is often an indication of a movie’s endurance in theaters.Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicebroke records by opening with $166 million last weekend, but it suffered a sharp 69% drop this weekend, earning $51.8 million, a figure that’s slightly less than the $52.3 million estimates posted on Sunday. The Hollywood Reporterrecently spoke to Warner Bros. domestic distribution chiefJeff Goldstein, who revealed the studio isn’t worried about such a big second weekend drop.
“We’re not concerned with the drop. No matter how you slice it, to get to $52 million on any given weekend is an enormous accomplishment. We’re most focused on where we are in total. And our global number is huge.”
As of now,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicehas earned $260.9 million domestically and $421.4 million internationally for a global take of $682.3 million. Thesuperheroadventure also suffered a sharp 67% drop internationally this weekend, earning $85 million from 67 international markets. The movie also suffered a big decline in China, one of the most important international markets, where it was beat by Disney’sZootopiathis weekend.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s 69% drop matches the biggest superhero movie decline of all time, 2009’sX-Men Origins: Wolverine. Last month, 20th Century Fox’sDeadpooldropped 57.4% in its second weekend with $56.4 million, following a $132.4 millionopening weekend, the highest ever for anR-ratedmovie, and the biggest debut in 20th Century Fox history. Marvel’sAvengers: Age of Ultrondropped 59% in its second weekend last summer, and Warner Bros.‘The Dark Knightdropped just 53% in its second frame, following huge opening weekends.
It remains to be seen ifBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewill be able to surpass the $1 billion worldwide box office milestone, especially if it keeps dropping more than 60% each weekend. Warner Bros. will release their nextDC ComicsadaptationSuicide Squadon August 5, with production getting started onJustice League Part 1one week from today in the U.K. Do you think the studio should be concerned aboutBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s huge box office drop?
