There has recently been a push within theMarvel Cinematic Universeto include a more diverse array of heroes, withBlack PantherandCaptain Marvelhitting theaters in a few years. Today we have word thatMs. Marvel, a.k.a. Kamala Kahn, might be coming to the MCU soon as well. Before you dismiss this as another rumor, this comes from Marvel Chief Operating OfficerJoe Quesada. During an interview at Comic-Con, he revealed that, due to the growing popularity of the newMs. Marvelcomic books, fans shouldn’t be surprised ifMs. Marvelcomes to the big or small screen soon. Here’s what he had to say below.
“Our readers are the Johnny Appleseeds. They tell us something is resonating, something is hitting a core, and that’s something we should try to cultivate. Another great example of this:Ms. Marvel. If we had put this book out ten years ago, it probably would never have succeeded. Not only did we find the audience, but we had the right people on the book and we had the right editor on the book, the right creators on the book. And now we have a character that’s very recognizable - very, very quickly. That doesn’t happen a lot. Who knows whereMs. Marvel’s going to end up. You can be sure that, somewhere down the road, she will be a part of the future of Marvel in other media.”
After Carol Danvers took over as the newCaptain Marvel, the Ms. Marvel mantel was taken over by Kamala Khan in the comics. The character made her comic book debut inCaptain Marvel#14 in August 2013, before taking over theMs. Marvelcomic series in February 2014, making her the first ever Muslim character to headline her own comic book. TheMs. Marvelcomic has become increasingly popular over the past two years, but this is the first time we’ve heard anything about Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel joining the MCU.
Marvel Comics has been making a number of announcements lately to bring more diversity to the comics. It was recently announced that a 15-year-old African-American female namedRiri Williamswill take over as the newIron Man, now calledIronheart. This followed announcements that Jane Foster will be the new Thor, and the massive twist for the Captain America comics, that Cap was part of Hydra all along (which was later revealed to all be a ruse). GivenJoe Quesada’s comments in his interview withComic Book Resources, Kamala Khan could be the next big announcement for the MCU.
TheMarvel Phase 3lineup is already set in stone, but if Kamala Khan becomes more and more popular, we may hear plans for this character coming into the MCU sooner rather than later. The comments fromMarvel’sJoe Quesadacertainly bode well for fans of the character. The studio already has three untitled movies set for the year 2020, which will kick off Phase 4, but we don’t know what movies will take those dates quite yet. Take a look atJoe Quesada’s video interview from Comic-Con below.
