Is Namor Planned for Marvel Phase 4?

Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicks off this weekend withCaptain America: Civil War. This means fans now have three solid years of new movies where we’ll be introduced to a number of characters likeDoctor Strange,Black PantherandCaptain Marvel. While Phase 3 is set in stone, there is plenty of mystery swirling around Phase 4. The studio announced three release dates for unspecified projects on August 20, 2025, July 23, 2025 and July 08, 2025, which will likely be the first of these Phase 4 movies. Though we still don’t have any clue what will be slotted into these dates. IfCaptain America: Civil WarwriterStephen McFeelyhas anything to say about it, one of the movies will introduceNamortheSub-Mariner.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,Stephen McFeely, who is also co-writing bothAvengers: Infinity Warmovies withChristopher Markus, was asked whatMarvel characterhe would like to see make his or her MCU debut inMarvel Phase 4. Without hesitation, the writer revealed that he’d like to seeNamorsurface the most, out of the characters we haven’t already seen in the MCU yet. Here’s what he had to say below.

“Namor. He is kind of a jerk and has a chip on his shoulder and he is a king and lives underwater. The degree of difficulty is so high, though. ‘Cause it could be a great movie or it could be truly terrible.”

Namor was initially created byBill Everettfor an unreleased April 1939 issue of Motion Picture Funnies Weekly, making his official debut in Marvel Comics #1 in October 1939, the first comic book from Timely Comics, the early predecessor of Marvel Comics. Namor was the mutant son of a human sea captain and a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, and he possessed severalsuper powerssuch as super speed, strength and the ability to fly. Throughout Marvel history, Namor has been a part of several superhero groups like The Avengers, Fantastic Four, The Invaders, The Defenders and the X-Men. The news of a potential Namor movie comes just a few days after we mentioned thatJustin Biebermight be perfect for this particular role. Coincidence? Probably, but it’s still entertaining nonetheless.

During the Golden Age of comics, Sub-Mariner was one of Timely’s top three characters, along with Captain America and the original Human Torch. At one point, Marvel Studios didn’t even have the rights to make a Namor movie, but they have since acquired the character’s rights from Universal, so a Namor movie could be possible. Namor even out-dates DC’sAquaman, who didn’t make his comic book debut until 1941. With DC already planning itsAquamanmovie for 2018, it’s possible that Marvel may try to counter DC’s movie with their own aquatic hero.
