James Gunn’sSupermanhas been a subject of debate long before we saw any footage from the DCU kick-off movie. With fixations ondetails around how the movie’s flying scenes look, the dialogue, the casting, the plot, one thing that has slipped under the radar is the long-time confusing question of how no one knows that Clark Kent is Superman just because he slumps his shoulders, ruffles his hair, and wears a pair of glasses. It seems that even Gunn had forgotten why one part of his Clark Kent attire was so important to his disguise, but has made sure it is in the movie.
Early Screenings Reveal ‘Superman’s Opening Scene Continues a Big Trend of Stealing From ‘Star Wars’
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Superman was born!
That would be Clark’s glasses, which come with hypno-power and ultimately mean that when he is wearing them, it protects his identity as Superman. Naturally, this is not news to everyone, but there will be some who have a sudden realization and ask, “So is that why Christopher Reeve’s Clark kept taking off his glasses when he was first trying to reveal his identity to Lois and then quickly put them back on when he couldn’t do it?” As Gunn explained:

“That’s canon in the comics. It’s kind of been forgotten but that’s from the comics. I was sitting with Tom King, the comic book writer, and I was like, ‘you know the thing that I just don’t really know how to reconcile in myself is the glasses because the glasses always bothered me as a kid.’ They bothered me because I just don’t have that much suspension of disbelief to believe that.”
What Are Superman’s Hypno-Glasses?
Back when Superman was still a bright, weird, and very comic book character, DC and Marvel Comics were full of ridiculous ideas that became almost logical in the world of superheroes and villains. Among some bonkers footnotes were hypno-glasses.
Having been introduced back in the 1970s, when most people were seeing strange things thanks to their “of-the-time” habits, hypno-glasses were originally introduced in a subtle, controversial, and easily forgotten comic panel and were simply another part of Clark’s accessory list for his normal day-to-day life. But lore is lore, and if it exists in a remote part of the expansive history of comics, then chances are James Gunn will somehow discover it and make it part of his DCU.

Hypno-glasses sound like one of the zaniest things on the planet, and that means they will fit perfectly into the true Saturday morning cartoon comic book world that Gunn is creating. While in recent years,Superman has become a mighty god-like being, all-powerful and dominant in many cases, and certainly a lot darker than the days when he used to go around lifting burglars out of offices and depositing them in police cells, Gunn’s world is looking to bring together both some modern and some classic traits of the Man of Steel, and meld them together in a new iteration that will continue for the next decade.
