James Gunnseems to have taken to his new role as co-CEO of DC Studios with ease, and is about to face the real first test of the revamped DCU with this summer’s release ofSuperman. However, behind the scenes, it is not unfair to say that challenges are being faced every day to iron out creases, weed out potentially disappointing scripting and production results, and ensure what makes it to screens is the best it can be. And Gunn already knows that he, his fellow co-CEO, and their extended team will not get everything right.
Supermanis in the can and ready to roll out this July, but during the recent press event for DC Studio’s upcoming slate, Gunn explained that there are some exciting things to come – including an unannounced series he calls his favorite project to date – but he also knows that there are already small things that he regrets.

“I mean, life is complicated. There’s always little things. Like I wish I did that differently. I wish I asked David (Corenswet) to do that take differently, it’s just like little things. There’s writers that we put on projects that I wish we didn’t, but overall, I feel just so lucky. I mean, the fact that, Ana (Nogueira) was on Supergirl, came out with this great script. The fact that there’s another…my favorite project nobody even knows about yet. It’s been my favorite project for a few months. Nobody even knows it.”

James Gunn & Peter Safran Know Where They Are Headed…but It Won’t Be Without Struggles
The world of DC movies has, on the whole, been littered with constant disappointments among some outstanding highs. For every project likeChristopher Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogy, there are severalShazam! Fury of the Gods. For both Gunn and Safran, there are definitely challenges ahead, and they are completely aware that not everything they do will land perfectly. As Gunn explained:
“We’re an organization of basically 13 people that’s able to produce all this material and have it go and have it all be high quality. We’re going to make mistakes. Some things are going to be better than others… So we’re doing everything we can to make everything as good as possible. And I feel remarkably fortunate.”

Safran followed this up by reiterating how far DC Studios has advanced in two years, as despite only one project being released in that time –Creature Commandos– the work that has gone on behind the scenes to develop and prepare the future slate of movies is putting the franchise in a good place. He said:
“As hard as we are on ourselves, if two years ago, when we all sat in this room together, we said, this will be your output two years from now, I think we would have been surprised that we could accomplish that much. Particularly with the five months of pencils down in our first year, they were always really problematic for everybody. So I think we feel pretty good (about the future).”

There is no one that believes the arrival ofSupermanis going to pass without plenty of comparisons to the past – especiallyHenry Cavill’s most recent iteration– and complaints from those who are still unhappy with how the old DCEU ended – especially Henry Cavill’s most recent iteration. Are you spotting a theme? But this is a new DCU, a new vision, and a new creative voice. All of that needs time to grow and evolve, and it is clear that the future of the franchise is looking more cohesive and potentially successful than it has in the last ten years.
