After the release of last year’sAvengers: Age of Ultron, filmmakerJoss Whedonessentially parted ways with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director made some now-infamous comments about how the production process “broke” him, while not delving into specifics. The filmmaker did tease on numerous occasions that he was going to start writing original material again, and direct a new independent movie. While there is still very little we know about thisUntitled Joss Whedon Project, the director offered a few tidbits of information in a new interview.
The Wrapmanaged to catch up with the filmmaker at the HeForShe Media Summit in Los Angeles, where he was honored for his work in women’s rights. The site asked him what he’s working on now, with the filmmaker revealing a few details about anoriginal screenplayhe’s currently writing. Here’s what he had to say about this untitled project below.
“It is a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh-t. And that much is all I can say. It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same. It’s the first time in my life I’m writing without a sort of studio audience rating - without a plan. I’m just writing about something I care about, so it’s a little terrifying and it’s taking a little longer. But I think it will be good!”
He added that he plans to finish the script within the next few months, if he can, “just get a little more traction on that third-act issue.” In between 2012’sThe Avengersand last year’sAvengers: Age of Ultron, the filmmaker wrote and directed the 2013 indie Shakespeare adaptationMuch Ado About Nothing, while also writing the script for 2014’sIn Your Eyes, which was directed byBrin Hill. While the director may not make anotherMarvel movieanytime soon, he still will be involved on theMarvel comicsside and is writing a new story for Captain America.
The filmmaker teamed up with comic artistJohn Cassadayfor an eight-page story that appeared inCaptain America: Sam Wilson#7, which debuted on March 30. The filmmaker has also said that he’s open to returning to theMarvel Cinematic Universeto direct a female-centric movie, but he clarified during this interview that he won’t be directing the studio’sCaptain Marvel, which is set for release on July 26, 2025. He added that he’s more interested in stories with the same tone ofJessica Jones, while praising Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feigefor fighting to get a stand aloneCaptain Marvelmovie. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with more onJoss Whedon’s next movie as soon as more details surface.
