Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop 3

Although the movie has only recently started production and has not yet been given a premiere date, some details about the possible plot of the sequel have been revealed in a long line that reads, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foleyis rumored to follow Axel (Murphy) returning to Beverly Hills to look into the death of an old friend while uncovering police corruption within the force. In Los Angeles, he reunites with his daughter (Taylour Paige) and teams up with her by-the-book cop ex-boyfriend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to solve the case.”

It has been almost three decades since Eddie Murphy’s last outing inBeverly Hills Cop 3, which was not exactly a roaring success, but thanks to the current surge in revivals of 80s and early 90s movies, the film could certainly benefit from having a long break. While the idea of a new movie has been coming and going for a long while, now could be the best time for it to finally arrive.

Eddie Murphy Has Wanted to Return as Alex Foley for Over a Decade

While Eddie Murphy’s movie career isn’t what it was in the 80 and early 90s, the actor did score a hit with anotherbelated sequel,Coming 2 America, and while that movie was a long time in the making, it seems that the same can be said aboutBeverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Murphy discussed the project last year, saying:

“They’ve been trying to make another Beverly Hills Cop for 15 years now. Right now, Netflix has it, and they’re trying to develop a script. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing next. But, I’m not doing nothing until the script is right.”

While its straight-to-streaming release means that Murphy’s return as Axel Foley will not have the chance to test the box office appetite for theBeverly Hills Copfranchise, the film could end up being watched by more people on its Netflix debut than the amount that would have ventured out to cinemas. Either way, the movie will still have plenty of fans of the old movies tuning in, and could even reignite interest in the original trilogy.
