Kevin Smithisn’t wasting any time with getting a new movie in the works ahead of the premiere of his latest feature film. In September, the filmmaker will release the sequelClerks III, putting a bow on the trilogy of films that he began in 1994. But the gears are always turning in Smith’s head, and he has apparently been working on something new amid preparing for theClerks IIItour this fall. Taking to Instagram, theMallratsdirector posted an image of the opening scene from his newest screenplay to tease what’s coming next.

“I finished a new script today,” Smith said. “One day I might get to direct it. And some total strangers will love it. While other total strangers will hate it. But that’s only if I get lucky. Today, I’ve got a blueprint for what my possible future might look like. And so the journey begins again…”

Clerks III Not Even Supposed to Be Here Today

Smith doesn’t reveal the title in the image, but he does show how this particular story begins. It’s set in a New Jersey town in 1986, making the best of its era with Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait” playing on the radio. Smith describes an unseen person making a call with a rotary phone before using the cord to wrap around his finger until “the tip turns purple.”

As this is the very beginning of the story, it’s unclear if the entire film will be set in the 80s, or if this scene is for a flashback sequence that will kick off the story before fast-forwarding to the present day. But with the first draft of the script already finished, perhaps it won’t be long before Smith starts divulging more clues about what’s next on the agenda for the filmmaker.
