Way back in December, Syfy announced a new TV series entitledKrypton, which will be set several years beforeSupermanwas even born, following Kal-El’s grandfather.Man of SteelscreenwriterDavid S. Goyercame up with the story along with Ian Goldberg, with the latter writing the pilot script. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything about the project since then, butDavid S. Goyerrevealed toColliderthat the show is set “200 years before"Man of Steel.
The original announcement revealed that the show will follow theMan of Steel’s grandfather, “as he brings hope and equality toKrypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatestsuperheroever known”.Man of Steelactually opened on Krypton, but, as the writer revealed, he originally wanted to spend a lot longer on Superman’s home planet. The opening scenes on Krypton were considered a highlight of the movie, by many fans, but it will obviously be very difficult to replicate production value like those scenes on a TV budget. Here’s whatDavid S. Goyerhad to say about how they plan to balance spectacle with story.
“Part of the fun of doingMan of Steel- and I was so insistent on setting that opening on Krypton and really seeing it, was pulling back the curtain. The first draft, the first forty pages were on Krypton, so we compressed that all down to fifteen minutes and there were a lot of ideas that I wanted to use in the film that didn’t ultimately make it into the film. In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”
Aside from Kal-El’s grandfather, it isn’t known what other character might pop up onKrypton, when the show heads into production.David S. Goyerteased there may be an update soon regarding the production, but it still does seem to be moving forward.David S. Goyerwouldn’t reveal if this new series will be based on any particularDC Comicsstories, so we’ll have to wait and see. None of the DC TV shows are connected to the Warner Bros.' movie universe now, and it doesn’t seem that will change withKrypton, especially since it is set two centuries beforeMan of Steel.
Of course, even if the DC TV shows, which are all spread out through different networks, would some day become inter-connected,Kryptonwon’t be a part of that universe either, since it is set so far in the past.DCshows currently airing include Fox’sGotham, The CW’sArrow,The FlashandIZombie, along with upcoming shows such as The CW’sSupergirlandDC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Fox’sLuciferand AMC’sPreacher.
