Is it the biggest unanswered question in cinematic history? Who is Sophie’s father? It’s the question that’s plagued so many fans of theMamma Mia!Cinematic Universe (MMCU), but it also has an answer — one that our beloved Sam Carmichael (better known as actorPierce Brosnanto the rest of you) knows. But the artist formerly known as James Bond is not going to be the one to spill the beans, it seems: no, he’s letting the as-yet-to-be-confirmed third film,Mamma Mia! 3(orMamma 3!ato those with class and style) have the glory there. Which is absolutely maddening, but also completely and totally fair.

The actor was asked about the prospect of a third film during a chat withThe Hollywood Reporterabout his latest project, the Paramount+ drama,MobLand. And at the tail end of that interview,THRasked one of the greatest questions of our time: “I know you’ve said that you’re ready forMamma Mia 3. Could you end the debate and share who you think Sophie’s biological dad is?”

Lily James as Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again

To which, the actor replied:

“I think you’ll have to wait for the next movie. I think leave that one right there. I know who it is, but I don’t want to be a killjoy.”

Way to bury the lede on the fact that you actually KNOW who her father is, Brosnan! What a way to stoke the flames of our fan desires ever further. Of course, all of this talk and excitement about a third installment may be exactly what Universal Pictures needs to see in order to go ahead and lock in all the necessary parts and players to get this movie going for real. At this point, we think Universal Pictures should know that a third entry into the MM!CU is a no-brainer, alas! That may not be the case.

‘Mammia Mia 3’, Starring Sabrina Carpenter? What About A Ruby Storyline For Cher?

Fans ofMamma Mia!andMamma Mia! Here We Go Againhave wondered about a third installment since the latter’s premiere back in 2018. The jukebox Broadway musical-turned-multi-million-dollar film franchise tells the story of mother-daughter duo Donna (Meryl Streep) and Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and their lives on a secluded Greek island, as told through ABBA songs. Back in August 2024, Christine Baranski (who plays one of Donna’s best friends and member of the Dynamos, Tanya)toldTHRthat she “was in London with [producer] Judy Craymer” and that the producer “is planningMamma Mia 3. She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!”

Previously, in 2022,Here We Go AgaindirectorOl Parker revealedthat Judy Craymer had always thought ofMamma Mia!as a trilogy of films, and had a plan in place for what that third film would entail. And Craymer herselfhas assertedthat the third film “will happen,” but the question of story remains. There are options as to where our musical melodrama could go: focusing perhaps on Sophie’s daughter all grown up, or maybe even a young Ruby (Cher) in her heyday? In either scenario, fans have made it clear who they’d like to see appear:Sabrina Carpenter, the actress and singer known for her megahit song, “Espresso” (and co-starring in theBoy Meets Worldspin-off,Girl Meets World). And guess what? Not only hasAmanda Seyfried been downwith the idea since 2024, Craymer is apparentlyeyeing Carpenter for a rolein the film, too.
