Not only has Marvel Studios been absolutely dominating the superhero movie market, but their deal with Netflix has provided fans with some of the best superhero TV shows around as well.Daredevilwashed away the sins of the failedBen Affleckmovie,Jessica Jonesgave us the female hero we’d been waiting for, and now, we are about to get a hero for hire withLuke Cage. We were already excited when he showed up inJessica Jones, but now, Netflix has revealed thefirst trailerfor theLuke CageNetflix series, and we are beyond elated.
Marvel decided to debut the footage for a room full of very lucky attendees atSan Diego Comic-Con, where the studio typically aims to please their adoring fans. Those who watchedDaredevilseason 2 were treated to a smallLuke Cagetease at the end of the season, and Netflix recently released a poster in anticipation of their SDCC plans. As it turns out, those plans included delivering a trailer that promises another different, but very promisingNetflix Marvelseries, which will help lead us to the eventualDefenderscrossover series.
Luke Cageas a character has a long history in Marvel Comics as a genuinely formidable, very strong good guy, but also as something of a mercenary, but only for the good. He and Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, who will be making his debut in a Netflix series next year, spent many years as the “Heroes for Hire,” who would do good deeds, for a price. Luke Cage, also known asPower Man, gained his powers from sabotaged experiment that left him with superhuman strength, and unbreakable skin, who attempts to rebuild his life in New York City. Ultimately, he gets pulled into conflict, all resulting from the past he is trying to bury. As was teased inJessica Jones, the two are love interests for one another in the comic book world as well, so don’t rule out a cameo fromKrysten Ritter.
Luke Cagefeatures a very promising, star-studded cast including fan-favoriteMike Colter(Luke Cage),Alfre Woodard(Mariah Dillard),Mahershala Ali(Cornell Stokes),Theo Rossi(Alvarez),Simone Missick(Misty Knight), Frank Whaley (Detective Scarfe) and showrunner and Executive Producer,Cheo Hodari Coker. This will also serve as another nice bit of diversity for Marvel, as they have been criticized a bit on the movie side of things for whitewashing, and for not letting a female superhero headline a movie yet.Jessica Jonesbeat the other girls to the punch by headlining her own series, and nowLuke Cageis givingColtera chance to headline his own show as a black superhero, which is another breath of fresh air in the diversity department.
Marvel Studios apparently isn’t content with just ruling the box office, they want to be the best thing on TV as well, and this new trailer may make fans believe they can accomplish that goal.Marvelwill debut all episodes ofLuke Cage Season 1on Netflix Friday, September 30.
