TheHalolive-action TV series is finally happening and we have some new details that are sure to make fans of thevideo gamesmighty happy. While not necessarily surprising on the surface, it’s been confirmed that Master Chief, the primary protagonist of the wildly popular video game series, will appear in the show. It’s also been confirmed that other characters from the game will appear, in addition to new characters created specifically for the live-action adaptation.
According to a new report, casting notes confirm that casting is underway for the Showtime series and that one of the roles they are looking to fill is that ofMaster Chief, the hero who has saved the universe more than his fair share of times over the years. The casting note describes a “Spartan-like warrior of large build,” which sounds about right. What’s interesting is that Master Chief is usually hidden under a suit of armor in the games and we never really see his face. If Showtime stays faithful to that idea in the series, it could be something of a thankless role for the actor who lands the gig. And also a bold choice for the studio.
The casting notes also reveal that the series is looking to cast a character named Dr. Halsey, most likelyDr. Catherine Halsey. The character has appeared in several of the franchise’s key entries, including Halo: Reach, Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians. She is important in the game series, as she created the SPARTAN-II that produced the super soldiers the games are famous for and their iconic, powerful armor. So it makes sense to include her. Lastly, a character named Jenny, an Asian woman age 18 to 20, is a role looking to be filled. There is no major character from theHalogames named Jenny, so this looks to be a new character altogether.
BringingHaloto theworld of live-actionin a meaningful way has proved to be a tall order. There was the Halo: Nightfall series andForward Unto Dawn, but those didn’t really capture a massive audience and didn’t represent the full scale and potential of the franchise. What ultimately becameDistrict 9started out as an attempt to make a live-actionHalomovie that fell apart. Later,Steven Spielbergboarded this project as a producer, eyed as a live-action series. After years of development, it’s finally moving forward.
To date, theHalogames have sold more than 65 million copies worldwide. Kyle Killen (Mind Games) has been tapped as executive producer, writer and showrunner. There is currently no word on a potential premiere date, but production is expected to begin in June 2019 in Budapest, Hungary.
