The spokescandies have returned. Previously, it had been reported that M&M’s would beditching their spokescandies mascotsin favor of employingMaya Rudolphas their new spokesperson. But this appears to have been part of a set-up for a joke that played out with a Super Bowl spot for M&M’s, showcasing Rudolph moving forward with a plan to rebrand the candy as “Ma&Ya’s candy coated clam bites.” Meanwhile, some of the spokescandies can be seen in the background with the red one even holding up a sign that reads, “HELP!” You can watch the spot below.

The spokescandies have also announced their return in an additional follow-up ad. Stylized in the form of a press conference, each member of the group can be seen back together again with an official announcement of their return, revealing that Rudolph’s stint as spokesperson was not in actuality a long-term plan.

Spokescandies M and Ms

“I can’t believe we were actually put on pause,” the Red M&M says in the clip.

The Purple M&M adds, “I’m glad to be back, because this is what I was made for. As a walking, talking candy, my options are pretty limited.”

The Spokescandies Are Back

“I’m thrilled to be working with M&M’s,” Rudolph had previously toldToday, noting how the ad campaign with her as spokesperson would launch with a Super Bowl ad. “I am a lifelong lover of the candy and I feel like it’s such an honor to be asked to be part of such a legendary brand’s campaign. It’s a very fun pairing, if I do say so myself. I think little Maya would be thrilled to get to work with M&M’s.”

That followed a statement released by the company that announced that the spokescandies were going away. This was in response to criticism there had been over slight redesigns to some of the characters. One of the key differences with the redesign was that the Green M&M’s go-go boots had been replaced with sneakers to better reflect the character’s “effortless confidence.” Many people were surprised that the spokescandies would be shelved in response to the backlash, but it turns out that they just wanted to have some fun with the situation.

“We have decided to take an indefinite pause from the spokescandies,” the statement reads in part. “In their place, we are proud to introduce a spokesperson American can agree on: the beloved Maya Rudolph. We are confident Ms. Rudolph will champion the power of fun to create a world where everyone feels they belong.”
