More than 40 years have passed sinceMel Gibsonfirst became Max Rockatansky, the original protagonist of the belovedMad Maxsaga. And although there is already a new star in the franchise, Tom Hardy, is there a chance for Gibson to return? Well, the actor has now answered that very question. Released in 1979, the firstMad Maxfilm introduced audiences to a post-apocalyptic world that lives in constant war due to scarce natural resources. Police officer Max Rockatansky, however, seems to lead a quiet life between his job and spending time with his wife and baby. However, when a group of motorcyclists murders his family, Max sets out on a revenge mission. A mission that will become his only reason for living.
That first installment was followed by two sequels, both directed by George Miller like the first one, and also starringMel Gibson. The last installment in the original trilogy,Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, came out in 1985, and fans thought it would be the end. However, in 2015, Miller surprised the world withMad Max: Fury Road.

For many,Fury Roadis considered one of the best films of the new millennium so far, it stars Hardy as Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, a character who managed to become as popular as the protagonist. Such was the impact of the heroine, that the next film in the franchise will focus on her, a prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
Other projects related to the saga are also in development. But could they include Mel Gibson? In an interview withThe New Indian Express, the actor addressed the possibility of returning to the franchise:

“I’ve spoken to George [Miller], and at one point I was going to be involved, but I’m a bit old for that now.”
While Gibson feels he’s a “bit old” for aMad Maxreturn, no doubt many fans would love to see the actor be involved in some way.

However, she betrays him to free The Five Ways, with the aim of taking them to an idyllic place called the Green Place of Many Mothers, where she used to live when she was young. She meets Rockatansky while they are both trying to escape, and they team up to accomplish Furiosa’s mission facing Immortan Joe’s army.
The upcoming film starring Taylor-Joy will take place years before the events ofFury Road, focusing on a young version of Furiosa. For now, details about the plot are being kept under wraps.Mad Max: Furiosais set to hit theaters on June 07, 2025.
