It’s been a long and winding road for animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky to get his animated filmFixedmade, making it a miracle that it was finally able to premiere at the Annecy Film Festival this past week, a little over 16 years after Tartakovsky first conceived of the idea for the film and pitched it to Sony. Now, a release date has finally been confirmed for the long-in-development film, which has changed hands at several studios throughout the decade, before finally settling with a distributor. Following the premiere at the festival, we now know when we can finally see Tartakovsky’s raunchy 2D animated comedy.

It has been officially revealed thatFixedwill be released on Netflix worldwide on August 13, making it just under two months until the animated film, which was almost never made, is finally available for everyone to watch. While the original pitch forFixed(a dog and his dog friends go out for one wild night before he’s set to get neutered) was sold to Sony Pictures, the movie idea would be shelved following a change in leadership. Tartakovsky would fight hard for the movie to get made, and would eventually have New Line Cinema Co-Produce the film.

Every New Detail About Netflix’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Just Makes Me More Excited

What happens when a genre of music with chart-topping success collides with an animated world occupied by demons?

However, David Zaslav’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery would lead to several films being shelved, withFixedbeing among them (yet again), alongsideBatgirlandCoyote vs. Acme. With the rights to the film back in Sony’s hands yet again,Fixedwould ultimately be sold to Netflix, leading us to where we are today with the adult animated film. Despite the vulgar and incredibly sexual premise ofFixed, the film has a lot of heart and received plenty of positive reactions following its premiere.

Fixed film

Fixed Pushes the Boundaries of Adult Animated Films

Fixedfeatures an impressive voice cast, withPitch PerfectandRighteous Gemstonesstar Adam Devine voicing main dog Bull, and Idris Elba voicing his best friend Rocco.Kathryn Hahnis also in the film as Bull’s love interest Honey, a Purebred dog whose way with words is anything but pure. Fred Armisen plays the Dachshund Fetch, Bobby Moynihan is the poop-eating dog Lucky, and Beck Bennett is the pretentious showdog Sterling. It’s a wide range of talent that undoubtedly helps elevate the film’s comedy to a new level.

While the project was initially envisioned as a 3D film, the production shifted to 2D-style animation to accommodate budget constraints, also leveraging Tartakovsky’s strengths as an animator. The acclaimed animator is known for creating series such asDexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and most recentlyPrimal, all of which feature stylistic 2D-style animation that stands out among the myriad of cartoon series that have been released in recent memory. Seeing the director work in a style that he’s familiar with in a feature-length film is exciting, especially with how much the project changed in its lengthy production.

Tartakovsky’s passion project may be unconventional, but the fact that the animation director is getting to tell the story he wants and have it head to Netflix in August is awe-inspiring. Moreover, having an R-rated animated comedy about dogs further cements animation as a medium (not a genre) that is capable of telling a multitude of stories that can’t be done in live-action.Fixedsets the precedent for future storytellers to try and push the envelope with their films and television series in any way that they can.
