‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Gives Fans Of The Novels One Of Its Most Beloved Scenes

So what is this new dinosaur and its whole deal? It’s called a Distortus Rex, more colloquially known as the “D-Rex,“according to director Gareth Edwards. Described as a dinosaur with six limbs and “teeth galore,” Edwards playfully said that, “It’s kind of like if the T. rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor.” (For those who aren’t familiar, a Rancor is aStar Warscreature.) If that sounds horrifying, that’s the point. “It’s as if another animal has been wrapped around the T. rex,” explained VFX supervisor David Vickery. “Gareth wanted us to feel sorry for it as well as terrified, because its deformities have caused it some pain, and there’s an encumbrance to it.” It sounds like this film is a lot more emotionally complex and nuanced than the previous reboot attempts that starred Chris Pratt, huh?

It also sounds technically complex, too, given that previous directors have shied away from including one of the most beloved and terrifying scenes from the source material: a river raft chase scene that involves a T. rex stalking the raft inhabitants from under the water. Previously deemed too hard to recreate on the big-screen, now in 2025, the technology has caught up with the author’s original ambitions, making the terrifying and thrilling sequence a possibility at last. And by the glimpses we see in this teaser, fans are in for a tense and satisfying time.

The script was written by David Koepp.
