FollowingX-Men: Apocalypsethis summer, which underperformed a bit and didn’t quite meet fan expectations, the future of theX-Menfranchise has seemed a bit uncertain. The one absolute certainty is that Fox is going to continue with the franchise and news broke this week that they are going to start shooting anX-Menmovie in Montreal next year. Now it looks like we got some subtle confirmation that movie is going to beThe New Mutants.
The Fault in Our StarsdirectorJosh Boonehas been attached to the project for quite some time and when the news broke a few days ago that Fox would be shooting a newX-Menmovie in the Spring, many assumed it could beThe New Mutants. Director Josh Boone took to Twitter reveals the news was making the rounds and in a not-so-subtle, but very indirect way, he pretty confirmed that to be the case. Here is what he had to say.
“New X-Men film set to start shooting May…Hmmmm, what movie could it be?”
Considering the tweet, coupled with the fact thatThe New Mutantsseems to be the onlyX-Menmovie (what we know of) far enough along in the development process to start filming so soon, it seems like a safe betJosh Booneis gearing up to finally shoot hisX-Menmovie. He has been teasing fans with it for quite some time and his Twitter profile banner is even aNew Mutantscomic book cover, so at this point, it would be surprising if the mysteryX-Menmovie wasn’tThe New Mutants. As for the other information, Journal de Montreal reported earlier in the week that Fox would be shooting at MELS studios, where they shot bothX-Men: Days of Future PastandX-Men: Apocalypse. Here is what the report had to say.
“They will start shooting in May and they will occupy Studios 2 and 3 of MELS for several months. We had two and a half months of negotiations with the people of Fox explains Michel Trudel. I went to Los Angeles last October to try to convince them. We are very pleased that they have agreed to return to Montreal. They enjoyed their two previous shooting experience with us and they were very satisfied with our facilities and talent of the Quebec film industry.”
No cast members have been confirmed forThe New Mutantsyet, but directorJosh Booneteased in an Instagram post earlier this year that the movie would include characters such as Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock. There have also been unconfirmed reports thatGame of ThronesstarMaisie Williamsis being eyed to play Wolfsbane, a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair, withThe WitchstarAnya Taylor-Joyreportedly being looked at to play Magik, a.k.a. Illya Rasputin, the younger sister of Colossus. This new report also claims thatX-Men: ApocalypsestarAlexandra Shippwill return as Storm, withSophie Turner(Jean Grey),Tye Sheridan(Cyclops) andKodi Smit-McPhee(Nightcrawler) also potentially returning. SoThe New Mutantscould very well be that “soft reboot” for theX-Menfranchise we’ve been hearing about.
We don’t know much else about the movie, but it has been said that the next core franchiseX-Men moviewill take place in the 90s which would again make sense forThe New Mutants. As for the rest of theX-Menfranchise, Fox is also working hard onDeadpool 2so they can get that movie going sooner rather than later with reports also claiming they are already working onDeadpool 3, which could wind up essentially being the long-rumoredX-Forcemovie. ProducerSimon Kinberginsists thatGambitis still in the cards, but it is very unclear as to when that could happen. Fox hasn’t set a release date forThe New Mutantsyet, but assuming it really does start shooting soon, we will likely be learning a lot more about it in the near future.
