Earlier this week, an interesting rumor popped up claiming thatVincent D’Onofriowas being positioned to star as one of the main villains inSpider-Man: Homecoming. The actor would reprise his role as Kingpin from Netflix’sDaredevil, marking the first time a character from a Marvel TV show has shown up in one of the MCU movies. But apparently their is no merit or weight to this idea. At least according to the actor himself. Answering a question onTwitterabout his possible involvement with theSpider-Man reboot,D’Onofriosaid this.
“Sorry folks but this is news to me. It would be great but I don’t think it will happen. V.”
Now, this doesn’t 100% confirm that the rumor is false. There is always the changeVincent D’Onofriosimply can’t give an honest answer at this point. But a follow up tweet sounds sincere. And most Marvel actors don’t usually get fans to bother Marvel. Here’s what he said about wanting to joinSpider-Man: Homecoming.
“I love all this action about me doing #SpiderMan Tell Marvel!!!”
Fisk is a primary villain forDaredevilin the comics, but has also been a big bad for Spider-Man in the past, perhaps most notably in the 90s cartoonSpider-Man: The Animated Series. Kingpin was the main villain for Peter Parker during the duration of that series, but never appeared inSam Raimi’s originalSpider-Mantrilogy or the rebootedAmazing Spider-Manseries. The news ofVincent D’Onofrio’s possible involvement came just before it was announced thatMichael Keatonis back in talks to play the man villain, whom many believe to be The Vulture.
It has also been widely reported thatHomecomingwill feature a secondary villain in The Tinkerer.The Tinkereris a genius level engineer who can create and invent complex and sophisticated gadgets from spare parts and leftovers. The rumor states that The Tinkerer will be building Vulture’s suit from spare parts that were found in the wreckage of the Chitauri invasion of New York City, which of course took place in The Avengers. If this turns out to to be true, it will be a very clever and organic way of being able to tie in the greater events of the MCU withSpider-Man: Homecoming.
Robert Downey Jr.has signed on to appear inSpider-Man: Homecoming, and rumor has it he will be making even more upgrades for Spidey. In the post credit scene forCivil War, Parker discovers that the web shooters Stark designed for him also feature his classic signal light, which was another very classic reference to the character’s lore from the comics. But this new report claims that the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko influence on the newSpider-Man costumewon’t stop there, as Stark supposedly has some more upgrades in mind.
Spider-Man: Homecomingbegins shooting this summer. And we suspect thatDaredevilSeason 3 will be shooting towards the end of the year. It’s unclear if there will be any crossover in the production schedules, but with both project taking place in New York, it’s possible that characters from one or the other might show up on the TV or Movie side. While it doesn’t sound like Kingpin is inHomecoming, perhapsTom Hollandwill get a quick cameo in one of the Netflix series? We’ll have to wait and see.
