No One Will Save Youis a recently releasedscience fictionthriller starring Kaitlyn Dever, playing a young woman who must defend herself against a whole host of alien invaders. It provides a bit of a twist on your usual creature features. Besides having only one line of dialogue, the film shows us the aliens about eight minutes into the movie. Most other films of its type would have held off on showing the creature until a little while into the movie. To quote writer/director Brian Duffield:

“It’s the anti-Hitchcock, anti-Jawskind of thing.”

No One Will Save You

Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classicJawsfamously holds off on showing you the shark for a large part of movie. Even in the opening scene, where Susan Backlinie is out swimming one night and is dragged under the water, the shark is there but you don’t see it. That was partly the result of the mechanical special effects refusing to cooperate, but most would say that worked to the movie advantage bymaking the creature in the film that much scarier. So, with such a tried and true method of filmmaking, why did Duffield mix it up withNo One Will Save You?

“It’s hopefully making people go, ‘There’s a reason why we’re seeing so much so early.’ By the end of the first act, you quickly understand that there’s a really interesting opportunity to do a story where these aliens have come from light years away. They’re here now, they’ve avoided all human detection, but now they don’t need to be cheeky — just walking into her house is the most boring part of their day.”

Other Information About The Aliens

There’s been a wide array of alien creatures in films across the years. From the xenomorph inAlien, with its very Freudian design, to Jean Jacket inNope, whose appearance is best left unspoiled. The alien visitors inNo One Will Save Youhave their appearance modeled after the greys, the popular alien visage that replacedthe little green men. As Duffield toldVariety, there’s a reason for that.

“We all grew up with the greys. I felt like I was missing this movie monster that I loved and no one was giving it to me. I think most of filmmaking is making the movie that you want to see that no one else is making. I wanted to see this monster back on my screen.”

While they may be modeled after the greys, the aliens inNo One Will Save Youhave their own quirks. According to Duffield, creating their design was a collaborative effort. “A lot of awesome people came in and made everything better. Even stuff like their distinct toes, that was something our creature designers came up with.” The creature designers weren’t the only ones hard at work making the creatures the best that they could be.

“Then the sound guys brought up so many great ideas and ways to build out their culture. We have a big alien at the end, we call him Daddy Long Legs. It has a very rhythmic hand motion that came out of a day of mocap we had with some performers. That’s exciting and cool.”

No One Will Save Youis available to watch on Hulu in the US, on Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
