TheObi-Wan Kenobimovie may not be happening, but fear notStar Warsfans, as it looks like the project could be repurposed as a miniseries for Disney+. Before digging into this even one bit, we must caution that this is just a rumor for the time being as it’s not being reported by anyone officially associated with Lucasfilm or the alleged production. That said, it is coming from an often reliable fan site that has proved to be accurate with plenty of other information related to a galaxy far, far away in the past. With that out of the way, let’s dig in.
According to a new report,Lucasfilmis going to make an Obi-Wan TV series starring Ewan McGregor for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The idea is that this would be a single-season event series featuring up to six episodes. The movie was expected to take place after the events ofRevenge of the Sithand prior to the events ofA New Hopeduring Ben Kenobi’s years on Tatooine watching over Luke Skywalker. Presumably, this event series would tell the same story, just stretched out over the length of a TV show, as opposed to a two-hour movie.
Though this is only a rumor for now, this would make sense for several reasons. For one, there are already two live-actionStar Warsshows confirmed for Disney+;The Mandalorianand theRogue One Prequelcentered on Cassian Andor. The former will center on a lone gunslinger in the Outer Rim following the events ofReturn of the Jediand the Latter will see Diego Luna reprise his role fromRogue Oneand follow his exploits in the budding Rebellion. Beyond that, even though Lucasfilm never formally announced it, there were several credible reports stating that the Obi-Wan movie was going to head into production last year, possibly under the direction of Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot).
Beyond the report stating that this is happening and isn’t just being discussed, there are no specific plot details or anything of the like. If this does turn out to be true, it’s highly likely we could be hearing about it sooner rather than later, as Star Wars Celebration is happening in April. That would be the perfect place to make a splashy announcement about the Obi-Wan series, to go along with whatever news is revealed about Episode IX. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on this possible show are revealed. This news was first reported byStar Wars News Net.
